Cross-Sport Brains: Arsenal Boss Arteta Learning from NFL Guru McVay!
A unique bond between two prominent sports figures, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay, is set to be highlighted this weekend as their respective teams, both owned by Stan Kroenke, compete in the same city. Adding to the intrigue, their opponents, Fulham and the Jacksonville Jaguars, share a common owner in Shad Khan. This serendipitous alignment provides a backdrop for the celebrated 'bromance' between Arteta and McVay, who are known to regularly exchange WhatsApp messages and share a deep mutual admiration.
Mikel Arteta has openly expressed his high regard for McVay, stating, "Sean is someone that I admire a lot, not only for what he has achieved, but the way he is as a coach, as a person, the way he presents himself. I learn a lot of things from him." Their connection goes beyond mere pleasantries, as they have engaged in tactical discussions over the years, even consulting on COVID-19 protocols in 2020. Their professional camaraderie has also extended to community involvement; during Arsenal's preseason visit to SoFi Stadium, the Rams' home, last summer, Arteta and McVay jointly conducted a coaching clinic for local children. Arsenal has also played preseason friendlies at SoFi Stadium in both 2023 and the subsequent year.
Despite their shared owner and professional kinship, their coaching journeys present different achievements. Arteta, who guided Arsenal to an FA Cup victory in 2020 during his inaugural year, is still relentlessly pursuing a Premier League title, having finished as league runner-up for the past three seasons. The Gunners haven't lifted the Premier League trophy since 2004. In contrast, Sean McVay made NFL history in February 2022, becoming the youngest head coach at 36 years old to win a Super Bowl, a testament to his impactful leadership.
This weekend will see both coaches in action with tight schedules. Arsenal is slated to face Fulham in a Premier League match across London on Saturday evening, with the Gunners currently leading the league. Meanwhile, the Rams and Jaguars have traveled to Wembley Stadium for their Sunday fixture. Arteta acknowledged the demanding schedule, particularly with a Champions League match approaching on Tuesday, but highlighted the importance of these moments: "We'll be connected. It's going to be a really tight schedule for both teams... but it's great to have them. It's great to have Stan and Josh [Kroenke] here as well with us. It's a good opportunity as well to connect everybody."
McVay, prior to his departure for the British capital, reciprocated Arteta's admiration, emphasizing the Arsenal manager's reflective nature. "One of the things that I love about him that we try to be able to do is he's so reflective on where can he continue to grow, and he's not afraid to ask questions that he wants real honest feedback from his guys of where he can improve for them," McVay remarked. He further praised Arteta's ability to embrace pressure, concluding, "The great pressure or whatever it is, it's a privilege, and he embraces it. It's cool to watch him move and how he handles it all."
