Court of Appeal Halts PDP Ibadan Convention Amid Leadership Crisis

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has upheld the ruling of Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, restraining the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from holding its National Convention in Ibadan, originally set for November 15-16, 2025.
A three-member panel, led by Justice Mohammed Danjuma, ruled that the PDP’s attempt to hold the convention violated the Nigerian Constitution, INEC guidelines, and the party’s own constitution.
The court highlighted that delegates from over 14 states, where congresses had not yet been lawfully conducted, must have their rights protected.
A fine of two million Naira was imposed on the faction led by Tanimu Turaki, emphasizing that non-compliance with laws governing political parties gives the judiciary authority to intervene.
This ruling is part of a series of nine appeals stemming from PDP’s internal leadership disputes, including the recognition of a caretaker committee led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, reportedly aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
Okey Osuoha, a lawyer and member of the PDP Caretaker Committee, described the judgment as a landmark decision, reinforcing that courts can oversee party activities when electoral and constitutional laws are breached.
He stated the ruling educates politicians on the principle that democracy depends on adherence to the rule of law, countering misconceptions that all party matters are purely internal.
Osuoha criticized recent comments by Senate President Akpabio regarding the PDP and Labour Party as “disheartening,” emphasizing that legal oversight ensures peace, order, and good governance.
Following the ruling, the PDP has formally notified INEC of a rescheduled convention set for the 29th and 30th of the month, affirming commitment to proper procedures and full participation of all party leaders.
