Cinema Empire Shifts: Kinepolis Seals Jaw-Dropping $30 Million Deal for Showcase Cinemas!
Belgium's Kinepolis Group is expanding its U.S. footprint by acquiring the Showcase Cinemas circuit from Harbor Lights Entertainment. This deal adds 13 high-end cinemas and 164 screens, enhancing Kinepolis's market position on the East Coast and its global portfolio. The acquisition aims to implement Kinepolis's operational model, offering enhanced experiences and potential real estate opportunities.
Belgium-based cinema operator Kinepolis Group has announced a significant expansion of its presence in the United States through the acquisition of the Showcase Cinemas circuit from Harbor Lights Entertainment, formerly known as National Amusements. This strategic move is expected to finalize by the end of summer, marking a notable development in the global cinema industry.
The acquisition encompasses 13 Showcase Cinemas locations across the U.S., specifically seven in Massachusetts, four in New York, one in Ohio, and one in Rhode Island. Under the terms of the agreement, Kinepolis will take direct ownership of six of these cinemas, while the remaining properties will continue to operate under existing lease agreements. This diverse geographical footprint on the East Coast is poised to strengthen Kinepolis's market position.
Harbor Lights Entertainment, the seller, is controlled by the Ellison family, having been established after David Ellison completed the acquisition of National Amusements from the Redstone family. This transaction represents a notable shift in ownership for a well-established cinema circuit.
For Kinepolis, this acquisition will add 164 screens to its extensive portfolio, bringing its total global screen count to an impressive 1,314 across 122 cinemas worldwide. The Showcase Cinemas, renowned for their high-end offerings, attracted approximately four million visitors in 2025 and generated over $90 million in revenues, according to Kinepolis’s projections. These cinemas are distinguished by enhanced food offerings, multiple premium large format screens, and the comfort of stadium-style reclining seats in 80% of their auditoriums, features that align with Kinepolis's focus on premium movie-going experiences. The acquired cinemas will continue to operate under the familiar Showcase brand.
Eddy Duquenne, CEO of Kinepolis Group, articulated the strategic vision behind the acquisition, stating, "This acquisition allows us to expand our market position in the U.S. from Michigan to the East Coast with an asset and a team that enable us to implement Kinepolis’ operational model and corporate strategy, ultimately enhancing the experience for moviegoers in these markets." He further emphasized the value of the acquisition by noting, "Furthermore, this acquisition provides a valuable real estate position, with future opportunities for further redevelopment and optimization being explored." This highlights Kinepolis's intent to not only integrate the operations but also potentially enhance the physical infrastructure.
Prior to this acquisition, Kinepolis had a substantial global presence, operating 63 cinemas across various European countries including Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and Poland. Additionally, the group managed 35 locations in Canada and 24 in the United States. The integration of Showcase Cinemas will significantly bolster its U.S. operations, building upon its existing North American footprint.
