Chaos for Travelers: Homeland Security to Suspend Global Entry, TSA PreCheck

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the suspension of its highly utilized airport security programs, TSA PreCheck and Global Entry. This decision is a direct consequence of the ongoing partial government shutdown, which commenced on February 14th following the inability of Democrats and the White House to agree on funding legislation for the DHS. The suspensions are slated to begin from 6 am ET on Sunday, according to reports first published by the Washington Post.
These programs are pivotal in streamlining travel, with TSA PreCheck designed to expedite approved passengers through faster security lanes at US airports, thereby reducing wait times. Global Entry, on the other hand, is crucial for pre-approved, low-risk international travelers, accelerating their US customs and immigration clearance. The suspension of these services is anticipated to create significant challenges and delays for a multitude of passengers.
Kristi Noem, the Homeland Security Secretary, issued a statement underscoring the severe "real world consequences" of government shutdowns. She clarified that both the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are prioritizing the general traveling population at airports and ports of entry, necessitating the suspension of "courtesy and special privilege escorts" associated with these programs.
The announcement has elicited strong reactions, particularly from the airline industry. Chris Sununu, the chief executive for Airlines for America, a prominent trade association, voiced profound concern, stating that the "traveling public will be, once again, used as a political football amid another government shutdown." He criticized the "extremely short notice to travelers," which provides little opportunity for them to adjust their travel plans, and urged Congress to swiftly resolve the funding impasse. Sununu also referenced the financial impact of a similar shutdown last year, which inflicted losses totaling $6.1 billion across the travel industry and related sectors.
The political stalemate that led to the shutdown revolves around a disagreement on immigration operations. Democrats have been advocating for significant changes to these operations, which are central to President Donald Trump’s deportation campaign. In response to the decision regarding airport security, Democrats on the House Committee on Homeland Security publicly criticized the administration, asserting on social media that it was "kneecapping the programs that make travel smoother and secure" and accusing them of "ruining your travel on purpose."
The impact of the DHS shutdown extends beyond travel security. The Trump administration had previously ordered the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), an integral part of the DHS, to suspend the deployment of hundreds of aid workers to disaster-affected areas. This highlights the broad operational disruptions caused by the funding dispute across various critical government functions.
