CHAN 2024 Mania Sweeps Africa: Madagascar's Historic Run, Ugandan Milestones, and Golden Boot Battles

The TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, has redefined African football, running from August 2 to August 30, 2025. This historic cross-border PAMOJA partnership has successfully revitalized stadiums like Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi, Benjamin Mkapa in Dar es Salaam, and Nelson Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, demonstrating the region's capability to unite, organize, and deliver a world-class event. The tournament exclusively features players from their respective domestic leagues, showcasing the depth of talent within African nations.
Uganda is set to host Group C matches entirely at the newly renovated Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, which will stage 12 matches, including nine group-stage games, one quarter-final, one semi-final, and the third-place play-off. The Cranes, Uganda's national team, will kick off their record seventh consecutive CHAN finals campaign with a high-stakes clash against Algeria on Monday, August 4, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. This double-header at Namboole will follow the 5:00 p.m. fixture between Niger and Guinea. Head coach Morley Byekwaso emphasized drawing strength from home support, stating, "Playing in front of our supporters gives us confidence and we are determined not to let them down." Captain Allan Okello echoed this sentiment, believing the team is ready to break their historic group-stage barrier, a challenge given their past record of never progressing beyond this phase in six previous attempts. Key players like 18-year-old winger Travis Mutyaba and experienced centre-back Gift Fred, alongside coaching staff bolstered by former national goalkeeper Dennis Onyango, aim to lead the Cranes to success.
Their opponents, Algeria, arrive in Kampala as strong contenders, having reached the CHAN 2022 final without conceding a single goal. Coach Madjid Bougherra has maintained a core of that successful squad, including top scorer Aimen Mahious and influential captain Zineddine Belaïd. Bougherra acknowledged the pressure on hosts Uganda but affirmed his team’s readiness: "My team is motivated and prepared for this challenge." Midfielder Ayoub Ghezzala articulated their objective: "Our main objective is to win every game." This will be the second CHAN encounter between Uganda and Algeria, with Algeria having secured a 2-0 victory in their 2011 tournament debut. Tactically, Uganda is expected to adopt a compact, counter-attacking style, leveraging speed on the wings, while Algeria will seek to control tempo and possession through their organized defense, creative midfield (Ahmed Kendouci), and potent attack (Mahious).
The tournament structure involves an initial group stage with teams divided into three groups of five and one group of four. The top two teams from each group advance to the knockout playoffs, commencing with the quarter-finals on August 22 and culminating in the final in Nairobi on August 30. Exciting matches have marked the group stage, including Kenya's sensation-creating victory over Morocco, a thrilling 4-2 win for Burkina Faso against the Central African Republic, and Sudan's surprising 4-0 defeat of Nigeria. Standout players during the group stage include Ryan Ogam, the 20-year-old Kenyan who scored against Morocco, and Clement Mzize, the versatile 21-year-old Tanzanian forward.
As the tournament progressed to the semi-finals, Madagascar made history by securing their first-ever CHAN final berth with a dramatic 1-0 extra-time victory over ten-man Sudan in Dar es Salaam, thanks to a 116th-minute goal from substitute Toky Rakotondraibe. In the other semi-final in Kampala, Morocco defeated defending champions Senegal 5-3 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. Sabir Bougrine's equalizer for Morocco matched Joseph Layousse's opening goal for Senegal. This sets up an intriguing final clash between tournament newcomers Madagascar and the vastly experienced Moroccans, who are seeking their third CHAN title.
Individual excellence has also been recognized. Morocco's RS Berkane striker Oussama Lamlioui leads the Golden Boot race with four goals, proving to be Morocco’s most decisive weapon. Trailing him are South Africa’s Thabiso Kutumela and Uganda’s Allan Okello, each with three goals. Over 60 players have found the net in CHAN 2024, highlighting the competitive attacking talent across the participating nations.
Off the pitch, Kenya’s successful hosting has been commended for meticulous planning, including layered security, well-organized fan zones in areas like Baba Dogo and Githurai, and broadcast deals. This success has elevated Kenya's standing in African football organization. Kenyan winger Boniface Muchiri, captain of Ulinzi Stars, received a promotion from Senior Private to Corporal within the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) for his standout performances for the Harambee Stars, including two key assists that helped Kenya reach the quarter-finals and secure a memorable win against Morocco. Chief of Defence Forces General Charles Kahariri lauded Muchiri’s commitment and discipline, acknowledging the KDF’s support for nurturing talent. Muchiri, deeply appreciative, also shared that the Harambee Stars players received over Sh5 million each in rewards from President William Ruto, Raila Odinga, and Sports CS Salim Mvurya, with Muchiri dedicating his earnings to his mother, who had been a constant source of encouragement throughout his career.
The Local Organising Committee for Uganda’s matches has implemented a fully digital ticketing system, accessible via www.cafonline.com or QR code, with prices ranging from UGX 10,000 for Ordinary to UGX 50,000 for Premium tickets. This digital approach aims to enhance security, efficiency, and convenience for attendees, who can use a single ticket for all games on a given match day. A substantial UGX 1 billion has been allocated for promotional activities across various media and grassroots efforts to ensure high interest and full stadiums, aiming to make CHAN 2024 in Uganda a memorable experience for every football lover. The tournament promises to be one of the most competitive and fan-driven CHAN editions, combining tradition, talent, and tactical intrigue across East Africa.
