CAF Rocked by Resignation: General Secretary Quits Amid AFCON Fallout, Interim Replacement Named

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is navigating a period of significant upheaval following the resignation of its General Secretary, Véron Mosengo-Omba. His departure, confirmed after a tenure marked by increasing pressure, has led to the appointment of Samson Adamu of Nigeria as the interim General Secretary. Adamu's appointment was approved by CAF’s Executive Committee and Congress during a meeting held in Cairo on Sunday, placing him in charge of the organization's day-to-day administration. A formal process will now be overseen by CAF vice-presidents to identify and appoint a substantive General Secretary in the coming months.

Véron Mosengo-Omba's resignation brings to an end an international professional career spanning over 30 years, dedicated to promoting football. In a statement confirming his exit, Mosengo-Omba cited a desire to devote himself to more personal projects. He also alluded to suspicions cast upon him during his tenure, stating, "Now that I have been able to dispel the suspicions that some people have gone to great lengths to cast on me, I can retire with peace of mind and without constraint, leaving the CAF more prosperous than ever." This statement followed the closure of an investigation by Swiss authorities into allegations of financial misconduct against him, which concluded due to a lack of evidence.

During his time as General Secretary, a position he was appointed to in March 2021, Mosengo-Omba, who is 66 years old and holds both Democratic Republic of Congo and Swiss nationalities, faced several criticisms. He was particularly scrutinized for remaining in the role past the organization's mandatory retirement age of 63. Additionally, some employees accused him of fostering a toxic atmosphere in the workplace, although an investigation initiated after staff complaints ultimately cleared him of any wrongdoing.

Mosengo-Omba's departure comes at a chaotic time for African football, with CAF battling a crisis of confidence stemming from several controversial decisions and governance issues. Notable incidents include the controversial ruling to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and subsequently award Morocco a 3-0 victory after the final result was overturned. Questions have also been raised regarding CAF's governance following the late postponement of a Women's AFCON tournament, which further exacerbated concerns about the body's operational management.

The contentious decision concerning the 2025 AFCON final involved a match between Senegal and hosts Morocco. With the score at 0-0, Morocco was awarded a stoppage-time penalty. Senegal's players protested by leaving the field, causing a delay of approximately 17 minutes. Upon their return, Morocco failed to convert the spot-kick, and Senegal eventually secured an extra-time winner. However, following an appeal by the Moroccan FA (FRMF), CAF's appeals body overturned the result, ruling that Senegal had forfeited the match and awarding Morocco a 3-0 victory. Senegal is currently challenging this decision by appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
