CAF Champions League Upset: GoldStars Blame First-Half Blunders After Crushing Defeat to JS Kabylie
)
Algerian football powerhouse JS Kabylie secured a significant 2-0 away victory against Ghana's Bibiani GoldStars in the first preliminary round, first leg of the CAF Champions League. The match, held at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, saw the Algerian side establish a crucial advantage ahead of the return leg in Algeria, leaving the Ghanaian champions with an uphill battle to progress.
JS Kabylie demonstrated their experience and intent from the outset, pushing for an early lead. An effort from Aymen Mahious in the 8th minute was disallowed for offside, briefly sparing GoldStars. Their goalkeeper, Emmanuel Kobi, then produced a superb point-blank save to deny the visitors further. However, the breakthrough for JS Kabylie came in the 21st minute when Medhi Merghem expertly finished a cross from the right, putting his side ahead.
Bibiani GoldStars improved their performance after the restart, creating several opportunities. Despite their efforts, wasteful finishing proved costly. Their hopes were further dampened in the 70th minute when poor defending from a corner allowed Babacar Sarr to tap home, doubling Kabylie's advantage and solidifying their lead.
Following the match, Bibiani GoldStars head coach Frimpong Manso attributed his team's defeat to significant first-half mistakes. He noted, "We made too many mistakes in the first half. To be frank, playing against such a team, if you start to lose passes in the midfield, you always find yourself wanting." Manso acknowledged some improvement in the second half after tactical changes but lamented another defensive error that led to the second goal, concluding that these lapses were key to the 2-0 margin of defeat.
The 2-0 scoreline provides JS Kabylie with a strong cushion as they head home for the reverse fixture. Bibiani GoldStars now face the daunting task of overturning a two-goal deficit on Algerian soil to keep their CAF Champions League dreams alive. The winner of this tie will advance to face either East End Lions of Sierra Leone or US Monastir of Tunisia in the second preliminary round. In the interim, Bibiani GoldStars will redirect their focus to domestic duties, including an anticipated clash against Asante Kotoko.
