Boxing Shocker: Hitchins Illness Forces IBF Title Defense Cancellation
The highly anticipated IBF junior welterweight title defense between champion Richardson Hitchins and Oscar Duarte has been cancelled due to Hitchins falling ill, as announced by The Ring on Saturday. This significant bout was set to be one of two 140-pound title fights on "The Ring: High Stakes" card, serving as the co-main event to Mario Barrios' WBC welterweight title defense against Ryan Garcia at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Brooklyn's Richardson Hitchins, who boasts an undefeated record of 20-0 with 8 KOs, reportedly became unwell shortly after successfully making weight on Friday. Sources indicate he was experiencing vomiting before being removed from the card early Saturday morning. This would have marked his second defense of the title he secured in 2024 by defeating Liam Paro.
A notable aspect of the IBF's regulations is its rehydration clause, which mandates that fighters weigh no more than 10 pounds over their weight class limit on fight day. Hitchins had previously voiced concerns about how this clause impacted his performance in his April 2024 victory against Gustavo Lemos, a fight he won by a narrow unanimous decision despite appearing lethargic in the later rounds.
The fight had generated considerable excitement throughout the week, with Hitchins and Mexico's Duarte (30-2-1, 23 KOs) engaging in escalating trash talk. However, Hitchins' unexpected withdrawal means fans will not witness the outcome of their heated rivalry. It remains uncertain whether the fight will be rescheduled for a future date or if Hitchins will consider moving up to a higher weight class.
Following this cancellation, Gary Antuanne Russell's WBA junior welterweight title defense against Andy Hiraoka has been elevated to serve as the evening's co-main event.
