Boxing Bombshell: Jake Paul vs. Anthony Joshua Mega-Fight Set for December 19 Showdown!

YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul is set to face former two-time unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in a professional heavyweight boxing match on December 19 at Kaseya Center in Miami. The fight, which will be streamed live globally on Netflix, is scheduled for eight, three-minute rounds, with both fighters wearing standard 10-ounce heavyweight gloves.

This marks a significant and unexpected pivot for Paul, 27, who was originally slated for an exhibition fight against WBA lightweight champion Gervonta "Tank" Davis on November 14. That bout was canceled after Davis was named in a civil lawsuit accusing him of aggravated battery, false imprisonment, kidnapping, and intentional infliction of emotional distress by an ex-girlfriend. Instead of a 130-pound opponent, Paul now steps into the ring with an elite two-time heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist who has fought as heavy as 256 pounds.

Jake Paul, with a professional record of 12-1 (7 KOs), is still considered a novice in the sport, having boxed only 70 total rounds since 2020 and possessing no notable amateur experience. This match represents a massive step up from his previous opponents, who have largely been MMA fighters or journeyman boxers. In contrast, Anthony Joshua, 36, boasts a record of 28-4 (25 KOs) and is one of the most decorated and hardest-hitting heavyweights in the world, with over 160 rounds boxed across 12 years as a professional.

Paul expressed his confidence, stating, "This isn't an AI simulation. This is Judgment Day. A professional heavyweight fight against an elite world champion in his prime. When I beat Anthony Joshua, every doubt disappears, and no one can deny me the opportunity to fight for a world title. To all my haters, this is what you wanted. To the people of the United Kingdom, I am sorry. On Friday, December 19, under the lights in Miami, live globally only on Netflix, the torch gets passed and Britain's Goliath gets put to sleep."

Joshua responded with equal determination: "Jake or anyone can get this work. No mercy. I took some time out and I'm coming back with a mega show. It's a big opportunity for me. Whether you like it or not, I'm here to do massive numbers, have big fights and break every record whilst keeping cool, calm and collected. Mark my words, you'll see a lot more fighters take these opportunities in the future. I'm about to break the internet over Jake Paul's face." Joshua's last outing in September 2024 saw him stopped in the fifth round of an IBF title fight against Daniel Dubois, after which he underwent elbow surgery.

The physical disparity between the two fighters is considerable. Paul typically campaigns as a cruiserweight with a 200-pound weight limit, though he weighed 227.25 pounds for his 2024 heavyweight exhibition against Mike Tyson. Joshua, however, has consistently weighed in around 251-252 pounds for his recent fights, including against Daniel Dubois, Francis Ngannou, and Otto Wallin. This gives Joshua a significant weight advantage of approximately 25-30 pounds. Furthermore, Paul stands at 6-foot-1, making him five inches shorter than Joshua, who is listed at 6-foot-6. Paul is Joshua's shortest opponent in a decade, while Joshua is the tallest opponent Paul has ever faced by four inches.

Eddie Hearn, Joshua's promoter at Matchroom Boxing, initially spoke of Joshua fighting once in 2025 before a massive all-British heavyweight clash with the retired Tyson Fury. The expedited fight against Paul, originally targeted for 2026, came about after the Davis fight cancellation necessitated a quick opponent. Nakisa Bidarian, CEO of Most Valuable Promotions, highlighted the rapid arrangement: "Everyone laughed when Jake Paul said in March that he wanted to fight AJ in 2026. Well, plans changed, and in under two weeks, MVP and Netflix have made one of the biggest fights of all time." He added that Joshua has every advantage except Paul's "delusional confidence," suggesting Paul could "shock the world."

The boxing community largely views this as an extremely challenging test for Paul, with few expecting him to be competitive against a fighter of Joshua's caliber and physical prowess. Hearn cautioned Paul, saying, "They say be careful what you wish for, kind of feel like that's all I need to say. Two of the biggest names in the sport will collide on Dec 19. Whilst I admire Jake's balls, he's going to find out the hard way in Miami." The dramatic shift in opponent for Paul — from a 135-pound lightweight to a 250-pound heavyweight — represents a staggering jump of seven weight classes and a physical difference of one foot in height and 120 pounds in weight from his previously scheduled fight against Gervonta Davis.
