Boxing Blockbuster: Pacquiao vs. Mayweather Rematch Set for September!
The highly anticipated rematch between boxing legends Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao is officially set for September 19, taking place at the state-of-the-art Sphere in Las Vegas. This monumental professional boxing event will be globally streamed exclusively on Netflix, bringing the fight to an unprecedented worldwide audience.
The announcement follows recent developments in both fighters' careers. Mayweather, who will turn 49 on February 24, declared his intention to come out of retirement after his planned 2026 exhibition against Mike Tyson. He also recently signed a multi-fight partnership with CSI Sports/Fight Sports. Pacquiao, 47, similarly emerged from retirement last July, battling then-WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios to a majority draw. He is also scheduled for an exhibition bout against Ruslan Provodnikov on April 18 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Details regarding the weight class and number of rounds for the rematch are yet to be announced.
Their first encounter on May 2, 2015, saw Mayweather defeat Pacquiao by unanimous decision in a bout that, despite failing to fully live up to its immense hype, shattered numerous boxing records that remain unbroken. The fight achieved an astounding 4.6 million pay-per-view buys in the United States, generating over $410 million in revenue, and set a new gate record with $72.2 million in ticket sales.
Both fighters expressed their sentiments regarding the upcoming showdown. Mayweather stated, "I already fought and beat Manny once. This time will be the same result." Pacquiao, who had long pursued a rematch, claiming an injured shoulder hampered him in their initial meeting, voiced his determination: "Floyd and I gave the world what remains the biggest fight in boxing history. The fans have waited long enough -- they deserve this rematch, and it will be even bigger now that it will be streamed live globally on Netflix. I want Floyd to live with the one loss on his professional record and always remember who gave it to him. As always, I dedicate this fight to my fellow Filipinos around the world and to bringing glory to the Philippines."
While the rematch may not break traditional pay-per-view records due to its streaming format, its availability on Netflix will provide access to over 325 million subscribers worldwide. This marks a significant move for Netflix in combat sports, following its successful 2024 broadcast of the Jake Paul and Mike Tyson clash, which garnered 108 million live global viewers, becoming the most-streamed sporting event in history. Gabe Spitzer, vice president of sports at Netflix, highlighted the significance, stating, "Bringing this rematch to Netflix is a massive 'full-circle' moment. We're thrilled to combine their storied rivalry with the immersive technology of Sphere to deliver a landmark sporting event to our members worldwide."
The event will also mark the inaugural boxing match held at the impressive $2.3 billion Sphere, a venue that previously hosted a UFC event in 2024 with production costs exceeding $20 million. The fight is being promoted jointly by Manny Pacquiao Promotions and Mayweather Promotions, in partnership with CSI Sports/Fight Sports, and will be produced by EverWonder Studio, Hidden Empire, and Limitless X Holdings.
