Box Office Shocker! Taylor Swift Outperforms 'The Rock's' Biopic Debut

Despite a robust promotional campaign and positive critical reception, Dwayne Johnson's dramatic foray, The Smashing Machine, is facing a challenging box office debut, currently projected to earn only a quarter of its initial opening weekend estimates. This unexpected struggle is largely attributed to the simultaneous release of Taylor Swift's new concert film, Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl, which is distributed exclusively by AMC Theaters.
The Smashing Machine, directed by Benny Safdie and featuring Emily Blunt alongside Johnson, delves into the turbulent life of MMA fighter Mark Kerr. The biographical drama chronicles Kerr's journey through addiction, success, and personal relationships during his peak in the UFC, aiming to rebrand Johnson as a more serious performer. The film has garnered significant Oscar buzz for Johnson and boasts a commendable 73% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praise Johnson's transformative portrayal, noting that the "gritty biopic that sidesteps cliché even at the expense of narrative satisfaction while still landing the dramatic body blows that count." The movie is officially slated for an October 3, 2025 release, with a runtime of 123 minutes, and is produced by Beau Flynn, David Koplan, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia.
Initial box office projections for The Smashing Machine were as high as $20 million just weeks ago, later revised to $10 million, but the film is now looking at approximately $6 million for its opening weekend, having made around $2.7 million on its opening day. This performance starkly contrasts with expectations for a movie designed as a big-screen experience for formats like IMAX.
Conversely, Taylor Swift's new concert film is eyeing an estimated $32 million in its first weekend, securing the number one spot. While a strong debut, this figure is roughly one-third of what her previous film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, achieved in its opening weekend. The new documentary's release coincides with the debut of her latest album, whereas The Eras Tour film was launched in conjunction with her record-breaking world tour. Announced just a couple of weeks prior, Swift's movie managed to secure the majority of Premium Large Format screens, effectively sidelining both The Smashing Machine and last week's holdover, One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, both of which were also promoted as premium big-screen events. While Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl does not yet have an official Rotten Tomatoes score, its audience score is a near-perfect 98%, suggesting significant fan engagement that could potentially push its opening weekend gross to $40 million.
The unexpected box office dynamics highlight how a strategically timed, fan-driven release like Swift's concert film can significantly impact even critically acclaimed and heavily promoted features starring major Hollywood stars.
