BMW's Electric Future Unveiled: Neue Klasse Platform & iX3/i3 Models Get Qualcomm 'Superbrain'

The BMW iX3, heralded as the “first Neue Klasse model to go into series production,” marks a profound reinvention for the Bavarian automaker. While acknowledging that this isn't BMW’s initial foray into a “New Class” (referencing the pivotal 1960s generation that saved the company from financial collapse), this contemporary iteration represents BMW’s “biggest future-focused project.” It signifies a monumental leap forward in technology, design, and overall driving experience. The 2027 BMW iX3 electric Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) is a cornerstone of this ambitious new vision, having made its global debut at the 2025 IAA Mobility auto show in Munich.
The launch specification iX3 50 xDrive boasts impressive figures, powered by twin motors that utilize BMW’s cutting-edge sixth-generation eDrive technology. This setup delivers a combined output of 470 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels, enabling the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in a claimed 4.9 seconds and reach a limited top speed of 130 mph. At its core, the iX3 features a substantial 108.7kWh usable battery pack, which integrates advanced new cylindrical cells and 800-volt technology. This configuration provides an estimated 400 miles of EPA range, with BMW also noting a WLTP range of up to 500 miles. Charging is remarkably swift, with a 400-kW charging rate allowing for approximately 217 miles of range to be added in just 10 minutes, and a 10 to 80 percent charge achievable in as little as 21 minutes. Beyond raw power, the sixth-generation eDrive system significantly enhances efficiency, cutting energy losses by 40 percent, reducing weight by 10 percent, and lowering manufacturing costs by 20 percent.
The iX3 introduces a fresh design language for BMW, described as both “reduced” and “contemporary.” It projects a more aggressive and robust stance than anticipated, firmly distinguishing itself as a Sports Activity Vehicle. Key exterior features include sharp creases, flush door handles, strong shoulders, a substantial roof spoiler, and vertical kidney grilles that serve as a modern homage to the 1960s Neue Klasse cars. These kidneys can be illuminated with the ‘BMW Iconic Glow’ option, which also includes animated welcome and farewell greetings, offering a choice of ‘relaxed,’ ‘balanced,’ or ‘excited’ moods. The vehicle achieves an impressive drag coefficient of 0.24, underscoring its aerodynamic efficiency. Inside, the cabin embraces a leather-free interior philosophy, with sustainable materials like a 3D knit made from recycled plastics and old fishing nets used for the dash and seat upholstery. The optional M Sport package introduces additional leather and microsuede trims. A central element of the interior is the BMW Panoramic iDrive system, designed with a
