Bloodbath in Katsina: 10 Dead, Including Pregnant Woman, as Bandits Attack Market

A series of devastating bandit attacks struck the Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State on Sunday, May 17, targeting the Gidan Wawo community and a busy grain market in Guga village. These assaults led to the deaths of at least nine to ten persons and left five others injured, underscoring a severe and persistent challenge to rural security in the region. Among the tragic casualties were a pregnant woman and a Forest Guard personnel, who was identified as a member of a vigilante group.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the heavily armed gunmen stormed the community around 4:30 pm, initiating their raid by shooting sporadically to announce their presence. The assailants then fired indiscriminately at traders, farmers, and other residents gathered at the market, turning the area into a scene of chaos. Many of the victims were farmers from neighboring settlements, including Gidan Sarkin Noma and Gidan Wawo, who had traveled to the market to sell their produce. Survivors detailed how the gunmen operated for several hours without interruption, compelling villagers and traders to flee into nearby bushes and adjacent settlements to escape the escalating violence.
Beyond the horrific loss of life, the bandits left a trail of extensive destruction. Reports indicate that several houses were razed during the raid, and an unspecified number of livestock, including cows, goats, and sheep, were rustled from the villagers. The incident plunged the affected communities into profound mourning, with mass funeral prayers for the deceased conducted on Monday morning in both Gidan Sarkin Noma and Gidan Wawo communities.
The attack is particularly alarming as it follows recent peace deals established between frontline council areas, including Bakori, and local bandit groups. Hon. Abdurrahman Kandarawa, the lawmaker representing the area in the State House of Assembly, confirmed the incident to newsmen, stating his participation in the burial rites held on May 18. He clarified that the gunmen responsible for this particular incursion were not the local bandits with whom the council area had entered a peace agreement. Instead, he asserted that these attackers originated from neighboring Zamfara State, noting that calls about their movement had been received prior to the attack, though their specific target remained unknown.
This latest incident starkly highlights the ongoing and critical security challenges confronting numerous rural communities across Katsina State. Residents have described it as one of the deadliest attacks in recent months, emphasizing that armed groups continue to target these vulnerable areas despite repeated security operations conducted throughout parts of the state. The cycle of recurring violence, kidnappings, and cattle rustling has led to the displacement of families, severely disrupted farming activities, and instilled deep-seated fear among residents who are continually struggling to rebuild their lives. As of the time of reporting, neither the police command nor the Katsina State Government had issued an official statement regarding the attack, a silence that further exacerbated anxiety among the affected populace.
