INEC Fuels 2027 Election Buzz: 9.3M Youth Register

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a significant surge in youth participation, with over 9.32 million young Nigerians newly registered during the 2026 Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise. This development highlights the increasing engagement of young citizens in the electoral process, laying a crucial foundation for the upcoming 2027 general election. INEC Chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan, represented by National Commissioner Prof Rhoda Gumus, revealed these figures on Wednesday in Abuja during the investiture of nine INEC Youth Ambassadors.

Professor Amupitan emphasized that the substantial registration figure underscores the critical role young Nigerians play in the nation's electoral landscape. He noted that increased youth involvement is vital for shaping electoral outcomes and strengthening public confidence in the democratic process. The appointment of the nine Youth Ambassadors is a strategic move by the commission to enhance its engagement with young Nigerians, ensuring that electoral information is disseminated through credible and relatable voices within their communities and social networks.

The INEC Chairman urged the newly appointed ambassadors to leverage their platforms to promote voter awareness, encourage peaceful and responsible participation, actively counter electoral misinformation, and mobilize young Nigerians to take a keen interest in democratic activities. He also charged them to uphold integrity, impartiality, and responsible citizenship throughout their tenure. The ambassadors, drawn from the movie, music, and comedy industries, include both returning and newly appointed individuals. The esteemed list comprises Amal Umar, Christopher Yohanna (popularly known as Uncle CY), Alex Kool Ibeh (also known as Mr Kool), Mike Godson, Emmanuel Ikubese, Seun Ajayi, Ibrahim Tukur Bello (known as Disability Is Not Inability), Sunday Agbaji, and Ambassador Thompson Ukeki.

This initiative comes as INEC intensifies its preparations for the 2027 general election, where youth participation is anticipated to be a significant driving force. In a related development, the commission also presented the Certificate of Return on Wednesday to Hon. Kallamu MaiJama’a, the declared winner of the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency bye-election, which was conducted on September 19, 2026. The presentation ceremony was held at the commission's headquarters in Abuja, with Rear Admiral Jamila Abubakar Sadiq Malafa (retd), the National Commissioner supervising Gombe State, handing over the certificate.
