Bloodbath in Isiolo: Police Search Team Ambushed, Five Killed in Brutal Bandit Attack

Five individuals, including two police officers, were tragically killed in an ambush by armed suspected livestock thieves in Gotu, Isiolo County, on Wednesday morning. The incident has sent shockwaves through the region, intensifying calls for immediate and decisive security action.

The victims comprised two officers from the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), identified as a senior police officer and a constable driver. Also among the deceased were two National Police Reservists (NPR) and a civilian livestock farmer, bringing the total casualties to five. The team had been ambushed while on a mission that had two reported aspects: pursuing suspected livestock raiders who had reportedly stolen cattle, and searching for a mentally challenged elderly man who had gone missing within the troubled Gotu area, near the junction of Lososia-Merti and Gotu-Merti routes.

Following the attack, the assailants fled the scene before security reinforcements could arrive. Eastern Regional Police Commander Stephen Chebet subsequently led a security team to Gotu as authorities initiated investigations. Isiolo County Police Commander Isaac Sang confirmed the incident, stating that an armored vehicle and additional personnel were dispatched to pursue the attackers. Later on Wednesday afternoon, a gunfight was reported between local police reservists and the bandits on the western bank of the river, with reports indicating an unknown number of injuries.

Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo vehemently condemned the incident, describing the deaths as “deeply saddening and unacceptable.” He highlighted that recurring attacks were fostering fear among residents, disrupting their livelihoods, and undermining peace efforts in communities heavily dependent on livestock. Governor Guyo called upon Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and national security agencies to urgently intensify operations in Gotu and surrounding areas, urging authorities to bolster patrols and intelligence gathering to prevent further loss of innocent lives.

The Gotu ambush occurred just a day after another deadly cattle-rustling incident in Igembe Central, Meru County, on September 15, where a herder named Haron Mwira was shot and subsequently died from excessive blood loss after more than 120 cattle were stolen. Furthermore, on August 1st in the Garse Dabata area of Gotu, two people were killed, and nearly 700 goats and sheep were stolen, though most were later recovered by a multi-agency security team.

These incidents underscore the persistent security challenges in the region, including the continued movement of suspected livestock raiders across county borders despite ongoing security deployments. Competition over scarce pasture by rival herders from Isiolo, Samburu East, and parts of Marsabit has made locations like Gotu and Kom into significant bandit hotspots, leading to numerous fatalities and livestock thefts since last year.

Isiolo and Meru are among the counties covered by Operation Maliza Uhalifu, a government security initiative designed to combat banditry and other violent crimes across several northern Kenyan counties, including Baringo, West Pokot, Turkana, Samburu, and Marsabit. The government states this strategy extends beyond enforcement to include long-term development initiatives aimed at addressing the root causes of insecurity. However, local leaders, including Governor Guyo, have criticized CS Murkomen for perceived failures to take decisive action, particularly regarding calls to evict herders from outside Isiolo who have settled in areas like Kom and Gotu.

The collective incidents highlight the urgent need for comprehensive and sustained security measures, combined with community empowerment and development, to restore peace, protect lives, and ensure economic stability for the affected communities.
