Blogger in Hot Water: Court Grants GH¢50,000 Bail in 'False Publication' Scandal

Blogger Samuel Amadotor of Dklassgh.net has been granted bail in the sum of GH¢50,000 with two sureties by an Accra Circuit Court, following his arrest and subsequent charges for allegedly publishing false information. The charges stem from reports that Amadotor disseminated content aimed at tarnishing the reputation of Okatakyie Boakye Danquah Ababio II, the former Board Chairman of the National Communications Authority (NCA).
Presiding over the case, Her Ladyship Evelyn Asamoah charged Amadotor with two distinct counts: publication of false news with intent to cause fear and panic, which violates Section 208(1) of the Criminal Offences Act (Act 29), and publication of false news contrary to Section 123 of the Electronic Transactions Act (Act 772). Amadotor formally pleaded not guilty to both charges presented before the court.
According to the Ghana Police Service, the arrest of Samuel Amadotor was carried out at his residence with assistance from the National Signals Bureau (NSB), following a complaint lodged by Mr. Boakye Danquah Ababio II. Ababio reported that harmful and fabricated claims about him had been circulated online by the blogger, including stories and videos.
During the interrogation, Amadotor allegedly admitted that the publication was not genuine and further identified one individual, Chairman Michael Yeboah, as the person who had directed him to produce and publish the content. Investigators have since launched efforts to locate Chairman Michael Yeboah to assist with the ongoing case.
After considering submissions from both the prosecution and the defence, the court decided to grant bail to Amadotor, though the specific justification for this decision was not provided in the ruling. Speaking after the hearing, Jerry Avenorgbo, Amadotor’s lawyer, expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision and stated that his client looks forward to clearing his name. The trial is expected to continue with Amadotor returning to court for the next hearing, as investigations into the matter, including the search for Yeboah, proceed.
