Blast from the Past: Google Gemini AI Revitalizes Old Cars, Starting with 2016 Chevrolet Trax!

General Motors is set to revolutionize the in-vehicle experience by integrating a more conversational artificial intelligence assistant, Google Gemini, into its vast fleet of vehicles. This significant technological leap, slated for a 2026 rollout, aims to replace the existing Google Assistant currently found in GM vehicles utilizing the Google Built In operating system. What makes this announcement particularly groundbreaking is GM's commitment to backwards compatibility, intending to deliver this upgrade to tens of millions of OnStar-equipped GM vehicles dating back as far as the 2015 model year.
David Richardson, GM’s senior vice president of software and services, shed light on the implementation details during an upcoming episode of The InEVitable podcast. He confirmed that the Google Gemini AI integration would be deployed via an over-the-air (OTA) update, extending its reach beyond just new 2026 models to a substantial 'carpark' of existing vehicles. Richardson noted that the primary limitation for older models would be the basic hardware requirements needed to run the sophisticated AI, as well as the compatibility of the Gemini application with legacy physical hardware and the OTA capabilities of older architectures. Despite these potential hurdles, the intent is clearly to maximize the accessibility of this advanced AI across GM's diverse portfolio.
This initiative represents a monumental undertaking for GM. By conservative estimates, updating OnStar-equipped vehicles across Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC brands in the United States, going back to 2015, could impact anywhere from 17 to 20 million vehicles. This scale potentially positions GM’s endeavor as the largest OTA update ever performed by an automaker, dwarfing even Tesla's substantial update efforts which have reached approximately 8 million vehicles since production began. Such a move is anticipated to be a 'surprise and delight' for many existing GM owners who embrace AI advancements.
GM further clarified the nuances of the Gemini integration, explaining that there will be two distinct approaches. For vehicles from the 2022 model year onward, which come equipped with Google Built-in infotainment head units (IHU), the Gemini AI update will be delivered directly over-the-air to the vehicle's system. For GM vehicles manufactured between 2015 and 2022, the Gemini AI functionality will be updated 'in the cloud' through the OnStar Interactive Virtual Assistant (IVA). This IVA, powered by Google Cloud’s Dialogflow technology and utilizing Gemini models, is now accessible through the familiar blue or red OnStar button on the rearview mirror, effectively bringing advanced AI capabilities to a broader range of older vehicles.
Addressing concerns about the potential replacement of human OnStar assistants, GM unequivocally stated that the OnStar Virtual Assistant will not supersede human advisors; rather, they are designed to be complementary. The IVA is tasked with providing faster responses to routine inquiries, thereby freeing up human advisors to concentrate on more complex or sensitive situations. Furthermore, the IVA is equipped with the capability to identify phrases and words indicative of an emergency, facilitating a rapid redirection of the call to a human OnStar Advisor. This ensures that while AI enhances efficiency, critical human support remains readily available.
In conclusion, Google’s conversational Gemini AI assistant is poised to significantly upgrade the user experience for millions of GM vehicle owners through a combination of cloud-based and OTA updates. Owners of 2022 or newer Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC models should anticipate an OTA notification to update their systems, while those with 2015 to 2022 GM vehicles can already experience the advancements by engaging their OnStar button.
