Black Princesses battle South Africa in U20 World Cup Qualifiers: A fight for qualification!

Ghana's Black Princesses commenced their 2026 FIFA U20 Women's World Cup Qualifiers campaign with a challenging home fixture against South Africa. Playing at the Accra Sports Stadium, Charles Sampson's side failed to leverage their home advantage, settling for a 2-2 draw on Sunday. Despite goals from Agnes Yeboah and Linda Owusu Ansah, who both found the net for Ghana, the competitive nature of Africa's youth teams was once again on full display, leaving Ghana with an arduous task to secure an eighth successive World Cup appearance.
The first leg saw the Black Princesses leading twice in the game, only to relinquish their advantage. Head coach Charles Sampson later attributed their inability to seal a victory to a notable lack of calmness in the final third of the pitch. While the team created numerous scoring opportunities, they struggled with conversion. Sampson also highlighted a late goal for the home side that was 'questionably' disallowed for offside, adding to the team's frustrations.
Following the draw, the result left the team somewhat 'broken,' as they now face the imperative of securing a win in South Africa to progress to the last round of the qualifiers. Coach Sampson, however, remains confident in his squad's mental fortitude. He stated, "We have a crop of players that are mentally strong and psychologically, we will also do those parts and get them tuned and ready for the next to make sure we get what we are looking for."
Emphasizing the two-legged nature of the tie, Sampson asserted that the team's primary goal is qualification. "Our aim is to qualify, and thankfully, the games are not only one. We have another game and this is only the first half of it," he explained. He underscored the need to go to Johannesburg and secure the desired result, reiterating, "We will do everything we can and make sure we go to Johannesburg and qualify to the next round."
The Black Princesses' journey to the 2026 FIFA U20 Women's World Cup, slated to be staged in Poland, hinges on their performance in the upcoming reverse fixture against South Africa. Should they overcome this hurdle, they will advance to the final round of the qualifying series, where they could potentially face either Zambia or Uganda, as they strive to achieve an eighth consecutive World Cup berth.
