Bitcoin Blazes Past $81K, Shaking Off Regulatory Fears and Rate Hikes!

Bitcoin’s price recently surged above $81,000, reaching as high as $81,055 on Friday morning in New York, marking a nearly 6% increase over the past 24 hours. This significant rally occurred despite a challenging week for the cryptocurrency industry, which saw legislative setbacks and a major interest rate hike.

The surge followed news that lawmakers had blocked the long-anticipated crypto legislation known as the Clarity Act. This bill aimed to establish clear regulatory rules for the crypto space by dividing oversight among various regulators, a framework digital asset industry leaders had long advocated for. However, the landmark digital asset market structure bill was ultimately blocked in a procedural vote, hindering efforts to create a defined regulatory environment.

Adding to the week's pressures, the Federal Reserve on Wednesday increased borrowing costs for the first time due to escalating inflation in the U.S. Federal Reserve Chair, Kevin Warsh, emphasized the central bank's commitment to price stability, stating, “The plain fact is that inflation is too high, and has been for too long. This summer’s inflation readings do not tell me that underlying trends have meaningfully improved.”

Historically, Bitcoin has performed well in low interest rate environments, which typically provide more liquidity for trading assets. While the cryptocurrency’s price initially dipped following the news of the Clarity Act blockage and the Federal Reserve’s decision, it demonstrated resilience by sharply rebounding on Friday.

In terms of investment vehicles, Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the U.S. experienced net negative flows earlier in the week, with investors withdrawing nearly $427 million. However, this trend reversed on Thursday, as flows turned positive with approximately $160 million being invested into the funds after two consecutive days of outflows.

Asset manager Grayscale provided an optimistic outlook in a research note on Thursday, suggesting that Bitcoin's price would likely not be negatively impacted by the Fed’s decision, characterizing the move as a mid-cycle adjustment rather than a fundamental cyclical change. Furthermore, despite the legislative blockage of the Clarity Act, regulators like the SEC are reportedly continuing to advance with pro-crypto regulations. The market's reaction was quickly highlighted on social media, with Bitcoin Magazine posting 'JUST IN: Bitcoin surges to $81,000 🚀' on September 18, 2026, encapsulating the coin's dramatic rise.
