José "Piculín" Ortiz, a towering figure in Puerto Rican basketball and a player who briefly graced the NBA courts, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 62.

The beloved center, widely regarded as one of Puerto Rico's all-time greatest players, had been battling colorectal cancer since late 2023.

He died at Ashford Hospital in San Juan, surrounded by his wife, Sylvia Ríos, and daughter Neira Ortiz.

The Puerto Rico Basketball Federation confirmed his death, issuing a heartfelt statement that mourned the loss of a legend.

"Puerto Rico loses more than an athlete. It loses a legend," the federation expressed. "Thank you for so much joy, for representing our flag with pride, and for taking the island's name to the highest level."

Ortiz's illustrious career began in college where he played for two years at Oregon State.

During his time there, he distinguished himself as the Pac-10 Conference Player of the Year in the 1986-87 season, averaging an impressive 22.3 points and 8.7 rebounds.

His talent led to him being selected 15th overall in the 1987 NBA draft by the Utah Jazz.

Before joining the Jazz in the 1988-89 season, the 6-foot-10 center opted to play professionally in Spain with Zaragoza, eventually playing for parts of two seasons with Utah.

Following his NBA tenure, Ortiz returned to Europe, where he had significant stints with prominent clubs such as Real Madrid and Barcelona.

He later returned to Latin America, playing in the Venezuelan league in 1997, and subsequently returned home to Puerto Rico a year later, eventually retiring from professional basketball in 2006.

Internationally, Ortiz was a cornerstone for the Puerto Rican national team. He proudly represented his country in four World Championships (1990, 1994, 1998, 2002) and an equal number of Olympic Games (1988, 1992, 1996, 2004).

His exceptional contributions to the sport were recognized with his induction into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2019.

One of his most memorable moments was at the 2004 Athens Olympics, where he played a pivotal role in helping Puerto Rico achieve a historic victory against the United States, marking the first time the U.S. had been defeated in an Olympic Games since they began fielding professional players.

After his playing career, Ortiz faced personal challenges, including legal issues.

In 2011, he was arrested on drug possession charges after federal agents discovered 218 marijuana plants at a house he was renting.

While a judge initially sent him to a rehabilitation clinic, he later tested positive for cocaine in November of the same year, leading to a six-month jail sentence.
