Bandit Attack in Sokoto Kills Chief Imam, Two Others, Displaces Residents

Suspected bandits have killed the Chief Imam of Talluje village, Malam Bashar, and two other residents during coordinated attacks on Talluje and Chofi communities in Bodinga Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The attackers reportedly stormed the communities on Wednesday afternoon, opening fire on residents, looting homes, rustling livestock, and forcing many people to flee. The incident marks the third reported killing of a chief imam in bandit attacks across the state in recent weeks, highlighting persistent insecurity in the region.

Residents said the assault lasted for several hours, with the gunmen moving from house to house before escaping with stolen livestock and other valuables. The attacks triggered the displacement of hundreds of people, particularly women and children, who fled to nearby communities, including Danchadi and Bodinga town. Community leaders also reported that several people were abducted, although the exact number has not been officially confirmed.

The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed the attack, saying security personnel have been deployed to the affected communities while anti-kidnapping operatives continue efforts to restore calm.

Local leaders and security analysts said there is no evidence that clerics are specifically targeted, noting that many attacks occur during prayer times when imams are among the last to leave mosques. Residents have appealed to the government for increased security and urgent humanitarian support for displaced families.
