Bafana Bafana's Panama Showdown: Live Drama Ends in Disappointing Draw!

Central American football giants Panama arrived in South Africa to face Bafana Bafana in a two-match international friendly series, serving as crucial preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The first encounter took place on Friday night at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, kicking off at 19:00, and was broadcast live on SABC Sport. A second friendly is scheduled for Tuesday, March 31st, at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town, with a kick-off time of 19:30.
These matches mark only the second and third meetings between the two nations. Their sole previous clash occurred in July 2005 during a CONCACAF Gold Cup Quarterfinal in Houston, USA, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Lungisani Ndlala scored for Bafana Bafana, while Jorge Dely Valdés found the net for Panama. Panama ultimately triumphed 5-3 in the penalty shootout.
Panama, known as Los Canaleros or La Marea Roja, are currently ranked 33rd in the world by FIFA, significantly higher than South Africa, who are in 60th position. Panama has steadily grown into one of Central America's stronger sides, making their World Cup debut in 2018 in Russia, where Felipe Baloy scored their first-ever goal at that stage. Their development continued with successful qualification for the 2026 World Cup, where they topped their group in the final round. Bafana Bafana, meanwhile, is looking to build momentum after their elimination in the Round of 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations, while Panama’s last outing resulted in a defeat to Mexico.
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos selected a mixed squad comprising both regulars and emerging players for these vital warm-up fixtures. The goalkeeping contingent includes Ronwen Williams, Ricardo Goss, and Renaldo Leaner. Defenders are Khuliso Mudau, Thabang Matuludi, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Aubrey Modiba, Khulumani Ndamane, Ime Okon, Samukelo Kabini, and Mbekezeli Mbokazi. The midfield features Teboho Mokoena, Jayden Adams, Thalente Mbatha, and Sphephelo Sithole. Forwards consist of Oswin Appollis, Tshepang Moremi, Evidence Makgopa, Lyle Foster, Bongokuhle Hlongwane, Relebohile Mofokeng, Themba Zwane, and Thapelo Maseko.
The first friendly international on Friday evening concluded in a 1-1 draw. Panama's Edgar Bárcenas opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, finishing low into the corner against the run of play. However, Bafana Bafana responded early in the second half, with Oswin Appollis striking a clean half-volley into the corner in the 48th minute, following a headed assist from Khuliso Mudau. Despite largely controlling possession and territory throughout the match, Bafana Bafana struggled to break down a disciplined Panama defence and find a winning goal. The home side created numerous chances, with Appollis and Lyle Foster coming close, and Teboho Mokoena testing the goalkeeper with a powerful strike. A late scare saw Yanis hit the post for Panama in the 80th minute, but the score remained 1-1.
Coach Broos's starting lineup for the first match featured Ronwen Williams in goal, a back four of Khuliso Mudau, Ime Okon, Khulumani Ndamane, and Aubrey Modiba. The midfield was anchored by Themba Zwane, Teboho Mokoena, and Sphephelo Sithole, while the attack comprised Oswin Appollis, Tshepang Moremi, and Lyle Foster. Notable performances included Ime Okon, who made an impressive officially FIFA recognized debut for Hannover 96, showing calmness on the ball and aerial prowess. Khulumani Ndamane, a left central defender, also had a strong outing. Themba Zwane, returning to the national side after missing AFCON, provided a crucial presence. Oswin Appollis continued his excellent form, scoring his seventh goal for Bafana Bafana. Jayden Adams, introduced as a substitute in the 60th minute, injected life into the midfield with his comfortable ball control, passing, pressing, and tackling, earning him a strong recommendation to start the upcoming Tuesday match. Conversely, Sphephelo Sithole was noted for being below par, with his combination with Teboho Mokoena appearing ineffective. Lyle Foster also struggled to convert numerous chances, suggesting he might be better utilized from the bench in the next game.
These friendlies are crucial for Bafana Bafana as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they have been drawn into Group A alongside co-hosts Mexico and South Korea. Their third and final group stage opponent will be one of Czech Republic or Denmark. South Africa's opening World Cup fixture will be against Mexico on June 11th. Their second Group A match is scheduled for June 18th against the yet-to-be-determined fourth side, followed by a clash against South Korea on June 24th. Panama, on the other hand, has been drawn into Group L, facing England, Croatia, and Ghana.
