Atlético Madrid is reportedly in advanced discussions to acquire Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder João Gomes, according to sources from ESPN. The Spanish club has reportedly secured a verbal agreement with the Brazil international and is prepared to offer a transfer fee of €45 million (£39m) for the former Flamengo player.

Following their recent relegation from the Premier League, Wolverhampton Wanderers is expected to place several key players on the transfer market this summer. Among those potentially listed for transfer are Gomes and his fellow Brazilian teammate, André. ESPN sources further indicate that Italian club Juventus, along with other prominent European teams, have expressed considerable interest in signing midfielder André.

Atlético Madrid had initially considered pursuing Atalanta midfielder Éderson. However, the Serie A club's increased asking price for Éderson led the Spanish outfit to shift its focus and prioritize the acquisition of Gomes. João Gomes, who is 25 years old, made the move from Flamengo to Wolves in January 2023. This season, he has registered 33 league appearances for Wolverhampton and remains under contract at Molineux Stadium until June 2030.
