Atiku Clarifies Fuel Subsidy Stance, Says “I Will Bring It Back”

The 2027 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has definitively clarified his position on fuel subsidy, following an initial contradictory statement made by one of his media aides, Paul Ibe. Ibe had previously indicated that Atiku, if elected president, would not revert to the previous subsidy regime.

Appearing on AIT, Ibe suggested that any proposed return of fuel subsidy would be temporary, with a plan to phase it out, while leveraging Nigeria’s crude oil resources to support domestic refining and reduce the cost of petroleum products. He underscored a commitment to not return to an “opaque” old regime.

However, Atiku Abubakar publicly distanced himself from Ibe’s statement just hours after the interview during a meeting with stakeholders.

The former vice president categorically stated that Ibe did not speak on his behalf regarding the fuel subsidy policy. Atiku firmly asserted that if elected president, his administration would fully restore the fuel subsidy.

Explaining his stance, Atiku argued that Nigeria is wealthy enough to provide the necessary support for its citizens through a fuel subsidy. He further contended that the removal of fuel subsidy has significantly worsened the economic hardship facing Nigerians, driving more citizens into abject poverty.

Atiku reiterated his commitment, stating, “I want to repeat categorically that when I said I would return the fuel subsidy, I will. Nigeria is rich enough to look after the welfare of its citizens.”

Reaffirming his position on X, Atiku declared that his stance on the subsidy issue “hasn’t changed and won’t change: I will bring it back.”

He expressed concern that a country as fortunate as Nigeria should not leave its people struggling through difficult times. Atiku elaborated on his vision, stating, “Nigeria has enough resources to take care of herself. I think a country’s wealth isn’t about how much money the government takes, but about how much the people can buy with the money they have.”

Beyond the immediate issue of fuel subsidy, Atiku Abubakar has also pledged to strengthen the naira and improve the overall living conditions of Nigerians if he becomes president in 2027.

He promised to restore targeted subsidies and enhance the purchasing power of Nigerians. His economic agenda includes making wages valuable again, ensuring farmers can transport their crops without excessive costs, enabling families to afford necessities, and fostering an environment where businesses can create products, hire people, and grow successfully.

Atiku’s ultimate goal is to make the naira more valuable, everyday life more affordable, and to ensure economic security, physical security, and a better life for every Nigerian.
