Amazon's Brutal Cuts: Nearly 14,000 Jobs Eliminated, 700 in New York Alone
E-commerce giant Amazon has implemented significant job cuts, with 660 corporate positions eliminated in Manhattan during October. This information was disclosed in a New York Post report, which cited records from the New York State government. Amazon confirmed that these layoffs impacted corporate employees across nine office locations, with two sites being particularly affected. The offices at 450 W 33rd St, near Hudson Yards, saw 233 layoffs, while the 424 Fifth Ave. offices, located in the former Lord & Taylor flagship building that Amazon acquired for $1 billion in 2020, experienced 182 job losses. These figures were reported in Monday filings from the state Department of Labour.
Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives commented on the situation, suggesting that the majority of these cuts were technology-related layoffs within Amazon, and New York City was not spared. Ives expressed surprise at the scale of the Amazon cuts, considering the ongoing competition for talent and the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
This latest wave of job reductions follows Amazon's earlier announcement of plans to cut nearly 14,000 corporate jobs. Initially, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy addressed the layoffs during an earnings call, clarifying that they were not primarily driven by financial cost-cutting measures or the adoption of AI, at least not at that specific moment. Instead, Jassy indicated that the affected employees did not align with Amazon's evolving culture. Bloomberg reported, citing informed sources, that these layoffs were impacting various departments, including logistics, payments, video games, and cloud computing.
Beth Galetti, Amazon's senior vice president of people experience and technology, further explained the rationale behind the reductions in a blog post. She stated that the cuts were a continuation of efforts to strengthen the company by reducing bureaucracy, eliminating organizational layers, and reallocating resources to strategic
