Amazon Jewellery Health Scare: Dangerous Cancer-Causing Chemicals Detected!

An investigation conducted by the Office for Product Safety and Standards has uncovered alarming levels of a hormone-disrupting chemical in certain rings sold on Amazon. Specifically, tests revealed that 'Dishowme butterfly rings', described as 'silver-coloured butterfly rings sold in a clear plastic bag' and marketed towards 'women and girls', contained high levels of cadmium.
Cadmium is a metal known to pose a serious chemical risk to human health. Exposure to this substance can lead to damage to hormones, kidneys, and bones. Over the past decade, it has also been linked to infertility, various cancers, and impaired development. The Office for Product Safety and Standards, a government agency, issued a warning stating that the jewellery presented a 'serious chemical risk' and mandated its immediate removal from online platforms. Amazon has since complied and pulled the rings from its website.
A spokesperson for the Office for Product Safety and Standards emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, 'This product presents a serious chemical risk as the cadmium content was found to be greater than the maximum permissible limit.' They further explained that 'Cadmium is harmful to human health as it accumulates in the body, may cause cancer and can damage organs.' Trading standards officials confirmed that the necessary 'corrective action' involved the 'removal of the listing by the online marketplace Amazon'.
The use of cadmium is experiencing a decline and is now heavily restricted across Europe due to its significant health risks. While it is still used in small quantities in the production of nickel-cadmium batteries, some plastic products like PVC, and as a colorant in ceramic, glass, and art paints, its presence is carefully regulated. Cadmium is also found naturally in certain foods such as vegetables, potatoes, chocolate, shellfish, and seaweed, which absorb it from the soil. However, cadmium levels in UK food are strictly managed through 'Maximum Permitted Levels' set by the Food Standards Agency.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) outlines the severe health consequences of cadmium exposure. Breathing air with high levels can cause shortness of breath, chest pain, a metallic taste, coughing, and flu-like symptoms, potentially hours after exposure. In extreme cases, this can progress to extensive fluid loss, lung damage, multiple organ failure, and even death, though the UKHSA cautions that typical environmental levels are not usually high enough to cause such effects. Ingesting cadmium can irritate the digestive tract, leading to diarrhoea and nausea, with large amounts potentially causing fluid accumulation in the lungs and facial swelling. The UKHSA also warns that prolonged exposure to cadmium can result in long-term damage to bones and kidneys, and may contribute to cancer.
Responding to the withdrawal of the Dishowme butterfly rings, an Amazon spokesperson stated, 'We require all products offered in our store to comply with applicable laws, regulations and Amazon policies.' They added, 'We continuously monitor our store and we develop innovative tools to prevent unsafe products from being listed. We take action to maintain a safe selection for our customers, including removing noncompliant products, and outreach to sellers, manufacturers, and government agencies for additional information, when appropriate. The product in question has been removed.'
