Alibaba's AI and Cloud Revenue Soars by 38%, Fueling Global Tech Race
China's e-commerce giant Alibaba has reported an acceleration in the growth of both its artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing businesses during the latest quarter, primarily driven by the global AI boom. Despite this specialized growth, the company's overall revenue saw a modest 3% increase, reaching 243 billion yuan ($36 billion) in the January-March quarter.
Revenue from Alibaba's Cloud Intelligence Group, which is at the forefront of the company's cloud computing and AI developments, surged by an impressive 38% year-on-year to 41.6 billion yuan ($6.1 billion) for the quarter. This growth rate surpassed that of the preceding two quarters, which saw increases of 36% and 34% respectively, indicating a robust upward trend in these critical segments.
However, the robust performance in AI and cloud was overshadowed by an overall operating loss for the quarter, amounting to 848 million yuan ($125 million). This marked a significant downturn from the 28.5 billion yuan gain reported in the same period last year. The primary driver behind this decline in profitability was a substantial increase in technological investments, as Alibaba, like many global tech companies, is heavily investing in infrastructure to support the soaring demand for AI capabilities.
The Hangzhou-based company, employing approximately 130,000 individuals, had previously committed to investing at least 380 billion yuan over three years into its cloud computing and AI infrastructure. This ongoing investment strategy reflects the intense race within the tech industry to build out the necessary foundations for advanced AI applications.
Alibaba has been actively integrating AI into its core businesses. Recently, it announced the full connection of its flagship Qwen AI app with its e-commerce platform, Taobao. This integration allows users to seamlessly
