AI Talent Wars Intensify: OpenAI Reclaims Key Staff from Thinking Machines

The artificial intelligence sector is currently embroiled in a fierce competition for top talent, a dynamic clearly illustrated by recent events involving major AI players OpenAI and Thinking Machines Lab. OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has successfully re-onboarded three former staff members: Barret Zoph, Luke Metz, and Sam Schoenholz. These individuals had previously departed OpenAI to join Thinking Machines Lab, a startup founded by former OpenAI executive and CTO, Mira Murati.
The return of Zoph, Metz, and Schoenholz to OpenAI was publicly announced on social media platform X by Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications. Simo expressed enthusiasm, stating the rehirings had been in the works for several weeks and that Zoph would report directly to her, while Metz and Schoenholz would report to Zoph. Further details on their specific roles are expected soon.
Concurrently, Mira Murati, CEO of Thinking Machines, posted an update noting that the startup had "parted ways with Barret Zoph." She also announced the appointment of Soumith Chintala as the new Chief Technology Officer for Thinking Machines, praising him as a brilliant and seasoned leader with significant contributions to the AI field. Chintala has been a major contributor to Murati's team, and his new role is met with considerable excitement.
The circumstances surrounding Zoph's departure from Thinking Machines were initially unclear. However, an internal memo to OpenAI staff, reported by Bloomberg, shed some light. In the memo, Fidji Simo clarified that Barret Zoph informed Mira Murati on January 12 that he was considering leaving, and Murati subsequently fired him. Simo also addressed external speculation, stating, "You may have seen information from sources that Barret was fired from Thinking Machines for ‘unethical reasons.’ We do not share these concerns." Zoph himself did not comment on the behind-the-scenes events.
Further reports from Fortune indicated that Zoph and Metz were co-founders of Thinking Machines alongside Murati, and Schoenholz was part of the "founding team" of researchers and engineers. This makes their departure and return to OpenAI particularly significant. Fortune also noted that Zoph, OpenAI, and Thinking Machines either declined to comment or did not respond to queries regarding the situation.
The broader context of this talent flux highlights the intense battle among AI companies for skilled professionals. There is additional speculation about other Thinking Machines researchers, Lia Guy and Ian O’Connell, potentially leaving, with Guy reportedly headed to OpenAI. These departures represent a blow for Thinking Machines, which notably secured $2 billion in seed funding in July, marking one of the largest such investments in Silicon Valley. The company also saw co-founder Andrew Tulloch leave in late 2025 to join Meta AI. Interestingly, Murati herself had reportedly turned down substantial offers, including a $1 billion package from Meta and packages worth $200 million to $1 billion from Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta Superintelligence Labs in July 2025, to establish her own venture.
However, the landscape appears to have shifted. The Fortune report suggested that AI startups are increasingly struggling to compete with the lucrative compensation packages offered by tech giants such as Meta, Google, and OpenAI. A source cited in the report indicated that financial incentives were a primary motivator for many of the recent departures from Thinking Machines, underscoring the high stakes and competitive nature of the multi-billion-dollar AI talent market.
