AI's Unstoppable Surge: ChatGPT Dominates with 1 Million New Users in Just One Day!

OpenAI’s ChatGPT has maintained its remarkable trajectory of growth, recently adding another one million users within a 24-hour period. This follows an earlier milestone where its weekly active users reached 400 million over the past six months, underscoring its widespread adoption and impact. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, reflected on the chatbot's launch in 2022 as an "unexplainable experience," noting its initial viral success, which saw it gain one million users in just five days.
The AI chatbot's journey has been characterized by record-breaking growth. Following its November 2022 launch, ChatGPT rapidly achieved one million users in a mere five days. For context, Instagram took approximately 2.5 months to reach this benchmark, while Netflix required about 3.5 years. Although this initial record was briefly surpassed by Threads, which garnered one million users within an hour almost a year later, ChatGPT still made history by reaching 100 million monthly active users in January 2023, just three months post-launch, making it the fastest-growing application until Threads claimed that title in July 2023.
Beyond its initial burst, ChatGPT continues to demonstrate significant engagement. According to data analysis by Semrush, ChatGPT recorded over 5 billion visits in February 2025, positioning it as the 8th most visited website globally. This represents substantial growth from 100 million visits recorded in November 2023. Currently, out of the 400 million weekly active users, 175 million are utilizing the mobile application, highlighting a consistent month-over-month increase of 5 to 15 percent in mobile active users since its launch in May 2023.
Financially, ChatGPT has also seen substantial success. The platform, while offering a free tier, boasts 10 million paying subscribers across its Plus, Team, and Pro plans, alongside an additional 1 million commercial plan users. Its paid subscriber base nearly tripled to 15.5 million in 2024 from 5.8 million the previous year. From these subscriptions, OpenAI generates $2.7 billion annually, with forecasts projecting this figure to reach $4 billion by the end of 2025. This success prompted OpenAI to claim in January that it was operating at a loss on its $200 ChatGPT Pro monthly plan due to subscribers' higher-than-expected usage.
Several factors have fueled ChatGPT's sustained growth. Recent updates to its versions and the introduction of new features have been pivotal. ChatGPT serves as a broad designation for OpenAI's various large language models, including GPT-3.5, GPT-4o, and GPT-4.5. A report by VC firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) in March attributed recent growth to customer novelty, as users explored how the application could integrate into their daily routines. The launch of GPT-4o early last year, with its enhanced multimodal capabilities, significantly boosted user figures from April through May 2024.
Further feature rollouts continued this upward trend. The introduction of Advanced Voice Mode led to another surge in usage between July and August 2024. Subsequently, the o1 model series was credited with increased activity from September to October 2024, demonstrating how continuous innovation directly correlates with user engagement. The premium ChatGPT Pro, launched late last year, offers access to an upgraded version of OpenAI’s 'o1' reasoning AI model, known as o1 pro mode, and lifts rate limits on other OpenAI tools like its Sora video generator.
Most recently, OpenAI introduced a Ghibli-style image-generation feature, which quickly gained immense popularity. However, its widespread usage led to an overload on the company's servers, causing Sam Altman to announce temporary rate limits. "It’s super fun seeing people love images in ChatGPT. But our GPUs are melting. We are going to temporarily introduce some rate limits while we work on making it more efficient. Hopefully, won’t be long!" Altman expressed. This new feature, the first major upgrade to ChatGPT’s image-generation capabilities in over a year, was powered by GPT-4o, trained on publicly available data and proprietary data from partners like Shutterstock.
Looking ahead, OpenAI has ambitious plans for ChatGPT. Reports indicate that the company is actively developing GPT-5, slated for release in 2025. Notably, free ChatGPT subscribers are expected to receive unlimited access to GPT-5 once it becomes available, signaling a strategic move to further expand its user base and maintain its position at the forefront of AI innovation.
