AI Power Play: Nscale Snaps Up Anyscale to Dominate Compute Stack

British AI neocloud Nscale is set to acquire software startup Anyscale for an estimated $1.65billion, as reported by Bloomberg.

This strategic acquisition is part of Nscale's broader initiative to capture a larger share of its customers’ AI spending and further its vertical integration strategy within the compute needs sector.

The deal will allow Nscale to expand its offerings into AI workload management and scaling, a crucial area for modern AI applications.

Anyscale was founded by the same team responsible for the open-source Project Ray distributed programming Python framework.

Initially, the company focused on building a platform to support projects requiring significant computing power.

Following the launch of GPT-3 in 2022, which brought AI into mainstream focus, Anyscale strategically pivoted.

It began offering specialized scaling services for various AI workloads, including serving and training large language models, data curation, inferencing, and reinforcement learning tasks.

Its platform is robustly built around Ray, providing comprehensive developer tools, observability, and orchestration capabilities.

The acquisition of Anyscale aligns seamlessly with Nscale's emphasis on vertical integration. Nscale has meticulously developed business lines spanning energy, data centers, and orchestration software.

The integration of Anyscale will now add critical workload management and scaling functionalities to its portfolio.

Anyscale articulated the synergy, stating that "Together, Anyscale and Nscale can co-design the software layer and infrastructure beneath it, something that neither company could do as effectively by optimizing its layer alone," highlighting the complementary nature of their technologies and expertise.

Nscale has been actively strengthening its financial position and expanding its reach. In March, the neocloud successfully raised $2 billion in a Series C funding round, which valued the company at an impressive $14.6 billion.

Its notable investors include industry giants such as Nvidia, Nokia, Blue Owl, Dell, and the Norwegian industrial conglomerate Aker.

Furthermore, Nscale has been diligent in deploying these funds and additional debt raises to secure vital compute and data center partnerships with prominent entities like Microsoft, British Telecom, and Nordcraft.

Anyscale, for its part, was valued at $1.38 billion during its Series C round in 2022, and the company recently reported a robust 70% increase in revenue in its most recent quarter compared to the preceding sequential quarter, underscoring its strong growth trajectory.

The post-acquisition, Nscale has confirmed that Anyscale will continue to operate under its existing branding and will maintain service for its current customer base.

All approximately 200 employees of the startup are expected to transition and join Nscale, ensuring continuity and leveraging their specialized knowledge in AI scaling.
