AI Innovators Showcase Cutting-Edge Tech at TechCrunch Disrupt 2025
Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a transformative force, not only optimizing complex processes but also democratizing access to essential services. Two innovative startups, Super Teacher and Mappa, exemplify this trend by leveraging AI to address critical challenges in education and human resources, respectively. Both companies are recognized as Startup Battlefield Top 20 finalists at TechCrunch Disrupt 2025 in San Francisco, showcasing their potential to reshape their respective industries.
Super Teacher, founded by former Google product manager and educator Tim Novikoff, aims to tackle the widespread issue of inaccessible tutoring in the U.S. Despite tutoring being one of the most effective educational tools, a 2023 survey revealed that fewer than 10% of students receive it, largely due to high costs that can run into thousands of dollars monthly. Novikoff, drawing from his experience as a math teacher where he observed a stark educational disparity between students who received tutoring (like those at Stuyvesant High School) and those who didn't (in Harlem), became committed to democratizing access to this crucial intervention. Super Teacher offers an AI-powered tutoring app for elementary school students at an affordable price of $15 a month, or $10 with an annual plan. The app features animated tutors with AI-generated voices that guide students through interactive, voice-activated lessons. Crucially, Super Teacher employs a deterministic system for content delivery, ensuring correct answers and avoiding the inaccuracies sometimes associated with large language models. The four-year-old startup has already gained significant traction, with approximately 20,000 families signed up and its app now in use in public schools across New York, New Jersey, and Hawaii. While Novikoff sees AI tutors as a valuable tool for teachers, akin to smart boards or calculators, he emphasizes that AI will never replace human educators. Looking ahead, Super Teacher plans to expand to other grade levels and partner with more school districts nationwide. Novikoff previously founded Fly Labs, a mobile video-editing app acquired by Google in 2015.
On the other front, Mappa, co-founded by Sarah Lucena in 2023 along with Pablo Bérgolo and Daniel Moretti, is revolutionizing the hiring process by introducing an AI-powered behavioral intelligence platform. Lucena built Mappa to mitigate the biases and subjective 'gut feelings' that often plague hiring decisions, transforming it from an imprecise art into a more data-driven science. Mappa's AI model analyzes voice patterns to detect traits such as communication style, empathy, and confidence. Applicants interact with an AI agent by answering questions, and the platform then provides hiring managers with a shortlist of candidates whose traits are compatible with the specific role. Mappa, which has raised $3.4 million in a seed round led by Tim Draper’s investment firm, Draper Associates, has scaled rapidly to over 130 customers in the U.S., generating more than $4 million in annualized recurring revenue in less than three years. A key advantage for Mappa is its proprietary, highly curated datasets for understanding human behavior, having found voice analysis to be the most effective assessment method after initially exploring video submissions and online presence. The impact of Mappa's platform is significant: companies using it report an employee turnover rate of just 2%, drastically lower than the standard annual rate of around 30%. Furthermore, Mappa promotes equitable hiring, with over 60% of its 3,000+ facilitated hires being women, LGBTQ+, or immigrants. Lucena, who was born and raised in Brazil, takes pride in creating more opportunities for these groups. Mappa envisions evolving into an infrastructure provider, with its API already gaining traction for applications beyond hiring. For example, Tim Draper personally uses Mappa to assess founders for investment, and Re-Skilling.ai leverages the platform for student skill improvement. Lucena foresees Mappa being used to fairly assess candidates for loans who lack extensive credit histories, ultimately serving as a tool for more equitable assessment in various settings.
Both Super Teacher and Mappa illustrate the vast potential of AI to create more equitable opportunities and efficiencies across diverse sectors. Their innovative approaches not only solve pressing problems but also highlight the ethical considerations and responsible development of AI as a powerful tool for societal betterment.
