The 2025 edition of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) is set to be a landmark event, following a record-breaking 10,717 entries—the highest since the awards' inception 12 years ago. A distinguished 13-member International Jury meticulously adjudicated over 10 days, shortlisting 343 nominees across 40 diverse categories, representing Africa's five regions and its global diaspora. This impressive turnout and rigorous selection process underscore the monumental growth and increasing global recognition of African music.

Nigerian superstars Burna Boy and Davido emerged as top contenders, each securing an impressive five nominations. Burna Boy's album 'No Sign of Weakness' and Davido's '5ive' both vied for the prestigious Album of the Year award. Davido's hit single 'With You' garnered nominations for Song of the Year and Best Collaboration, while Burna Boy also earned a nod for Best African Artiste Duo or Group in African Pop. Both Afrobeats giants were recognized in the Best Male Artiste in West Africa and Artiste of the Year categories, highlighting their continued dominance on the continental stage.

Matching their five nominations were South Africa's acclaimed DJ Maphorisa, recognized for Best African DJ and Album of the Year, and Morocco's rap sensation El Grande Toto, whose album 'Salgoat' and hit 'Diplomatico' garnered international attention. Senegal's Mia Guissé and Ghana's Moliy also joined this elite group with five nominations each, underscoring the growing influence and commanding presence of female artists in the African music landscape.

Nigeria's rapidly rising street-pop artist, Shallipopi, made a significant impact with four nominations, including Artiste of the Year and Song of the Year for his collaboration 'Laho.' He was also nominated for Breakout Artiste of the Year, with Progrex, the song's producer, also receiving a nod for Best Producer of the Year. Other prominent Nigerian nominees included Rema, who secured three nominations including Artiste of the Year and Best Male in West Africa, and Ayra Starr, with two nominations, also contending for Artiste of the Year. The extensive list of Nigerian talent further included Asake, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade, Ruger, Kunmi, Fola, ODUMODUBLVCK, Phyno, Reminisce, Fireboy DML, Kizz Daniel featuring Angélique Kidjo, Johnny Drille, Gaise Baba, Lawrence Oyor, Mercy Chinwo, and Ada Ehi, spanning various categories from HipHop to Inspirational Music.

Across the continent, Egypt's best-selling artist Amr Diab scooped four nominations, while Côte d'Ivoire's Himra picked up three, including Album of the Year for 'Big Aka 4 Aka Kai.' Tanzania's Diamond Platnumz continued his East African dominance with four nominations. From Southern Africa, breakout star Tyla and Eswatini's Uncle Waffles each earned four nominations, confirming the ascendant global power of amapiano and Afro-house sounds. Fellow South African artists Mawhoo and rap star Nasty C each received three nominations for their respective tracks. Other notable names include Côte d'Ivoire's Didi B with three nominations, Gabon's Eboloko recognized for Breakout Artiste of the Year among his three nods, and Emma'a with three nominations for Best Female Artiste in Central Africa.

DR Congo's heavyweights also featured prominently, with Fally Ipupa bagging three nominations, including Artiste of the Year, and Ferre Gola earning three nods, among them Songwriter of the Year. In North Africa, Morocco's Jaylann received three nominations, while Tanzania's Juma Jux also scored three, including Song of the Year for 'Ololufe mi.'

The diaspora's significant contribution to African music was also celebrated, with male nominees such as DJ Snake, Gazo, Niska, Tayc, Tiakola, Tif, Werenoi, WizTheMC, L'Algérino, and Odeal making the cut. On the female side, the nominees included Aya Nakamura, Annatoria, Choisie Basolua, Darkoo, Deborah Lukalu, Faouzia, Ronisia, The Unveiled, Theodora, and Zaho, highlighting the expansive reach of African musical influence.

Delani Makhalima, an AFRIMA jury member representing the Southern African region, articulated the profound significance of the 2025 nominees' list. He remarked, "It's been a dream of ours for a long time to work this hard to get to a place where African music can be heard by everyone. We were marginalized for so many years; our voices were not heard as artists, as creators, as songwriters, as producers, as engineers, as video makers, as filmmakers. Twelve years in, we're now here. This is global. This is AFRIMA, the biggest music entity on the face of the continent."

The competition promises to be fiercer than ever, with established heavyweight stars facing formidable rising sensations. Public voting is scheduled to open globally on September 10, 2025, via the official AFRIMA website, and will conclude on the eve of the main awards ceremony on November 30.

AFRIMA 2025, organized in partnership with the African Union Commission and the Federal Government of Nigeria, will be hosted by Lagos State. The celebration will run from November 25 to 30, 2025, featuring a series of events including the Welcome Soiree, the AFRIMA Music Village, the Africa Music Business Summit, a Host City Tour, the Nominees Party, and culminating in the Main Awards Ceremony. The grand finale on November 30 will be broadcast live to over 84 countries worldwide, showcasing Africa's vibrant musical talent to a global audience.
