African Champions Stunned! Senegal Parades AFCON Trophy They're Ordered to Return

Senegal recently played a significant friendly match, which followed a highly controversial decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). CAF had chosen to overturn Senegal’s initial 1-0 victory over Morocco in the AFCON final, instead awarding a 3-0 win to the host nation. This unprecedented reversal has led to considerable dispute, with Senegal vigorously appealing the ruling.
Before the kickoff of this friendly match, which served as their first fixture since the contentious AFCON final, Senegal’s captain, Kalidou Coulibaly, along with his teammates, defiantly carried out a lap of honor with the trophy. This symbolic act, accompanied by a pre-match performance from Youssou Ndour, underscored their conviction that they were the rightful champions. Coulibaly and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy subsequently placed the trophy in the presidential box, right in front of various officials, including the president of the Senegalese Football Federation, further solidifying their protest against CAF's decision.
The original AFCON final in Rabat had concluded in a dramatic fashion, steeped in controversy. Senegal players had briefly walked off the pitch to protest a late penalty decision. Despite the contentious circumstances, captain Sadio Mane managed to lead his team back onto the field. Morocco subsequently missed the penalty, and Senegal ultimately secured a 1-0 victory through Pape Gueye’s decisive goal in extra time.
However, CAF later ruled that Senegal’s brief walk-off had constituted a breach of tournament regulations, leading to the contentious reversal of the result. Unwilling to accept this verdict, Senegal has since appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, continuing to contest the ruling and seeking to have their victory reinstated.
Ahead of the friendly match in Paris, thousands of passionate Senegalese fans demonstrated immense support. Supporters marched through Saint-Denis with vibrant drums and chants before completely filling the stadium. Bally Bagayoko, the mayor of Saint-Denis, expressed the collective sentiment, stating, “You are the pride of the residents of working-class neighborhoods… Today, Africa is united. Everyone behind Senegal,” highlighting the profound unity and unwavering support for the team.
This friendly match holds particular importance as it marks Senegal’s first competitive outing since the controversial AFCON final. It serves as a crucial preparatory fixture for their upcoming World Cup campaign, allowing the team to focus on their future ambitions amidst the ongoing challenge to CAF's decision regarding their continental title.
