Ruto's Coastal Bonanza: President Splashes Goodies During High-Stakes Tour

President William Ruto has embarked on an extensive eight-day development tour of Kenya's Coast region, which began on a Saturday in Taita Taveta County. The tour is characterized by significant promises of development and a "bag of goodies" for the residents across six counties: Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Mombasa, Tana River, and Lamu. A primary focus of the President's visit is to address long-standing issues of land ownership and squatter problems, alongside boosting infrastructure and creating economic opportunities.

In Taita Taveta, President Ruto officially launched the construction of the 385-unit Wundanyi Affordable Housing Project, a crucial government initiative designed to provide accessible housing. Furthermore, he announced a substantial investment of Sh2 billion into the Affordable Housing Programme specifically earmarked for student accommodation. This investment aims to facilitate the construction of hostels for 5,000 students attending universities, technical colleges, and Kenya Medical Training Colleges. As part of this commitment, he laid the foundation stone for a Sh145 million student hostel project at Wumingu Technical & Vocational College, which will also be equipped with 340 beds. To enhance connectivity and access, President Ruto pledged to tarmac the road from Wundanyi town to Wumingu College and ensure reliable access to water and electricity for both the institution and the local community.

The President also inspected critical infrastructure projects aimed at improving regional connectivity. He reviewed the construction of the 57-kilometer Bura-Mto Mwagodi road, a vital project costing Sh2 billion that had been stalled for nearly a decade. This road is designed to connect Wundanyi to the Voi-Taveta-Holili highway, thereby unlocking significant economic opportunities for the highlands. Additionally, the government plans to invest a further Sh15 billion to upgrade the broader road network across Taita-Taveta County, reinforcing overall connectivity and mobility.

A flagship promise of the tour is the issuance of nearly 200,000 title deeds, forming part of a larger plan by the Ruto administration to distribute 500,000 land ownership documents to resolve squatter and land ownership disputes in the region. Specific allocations include 31,318 title deeds for residents in Mwatate and Voi constituencies in Taita-Taveta, 94,175 for beneficiaries in Lunga Lunga, Msambweni, and Kinango constituencies in Kwale County, and 36,826 for residents of Kaloleni, Rabai, Ganze, Kilifi South, and Malindi constituencies in Kilifi County. Mombasa County will receive 4,360 title deeds, while Lamu and Tana River counties will collectively see the distribution of 22,770.

Another monumental project on the agenda is the groundbreaking of a new Sh2 trillion oil refinery in Lamu County, which will be undertaken in collaboration with the Dangote Group. This project is expected to significantly boost the region's industrial capacity and create substantial employment opportunities. The President's comprehensive tour underscores the government's commitment to addressing socio-economic challenges and fostering widespread development across Kenya's Coast region.
