African Airlines Unite: SAA and TAAG Launch Strategic Codeshare Partnership

South African Airways (SAA) and TAAG Angola Airlines have officially launched a major strategic codeshare partnership, designed to transform regional and intercontinental air travel. The agreement, effective December 1, 2025, positions Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Luanda as key connecting hubs, offering travelers expanded routes and greater convenience.
Under the codeshare, SAA passengers can book flights from Johannesburg (JNB) and Cape Town (CPT) to Luanda (LAD), with seamless onward connections to Lisbon, Portugal, and São Paulo, Brazil. This provides direct access to Europe and South America through Luanda, extending SAA’s reach beyond its traditional network.
TAAG customers, in turn, gain access to SAA’s comprehensive Southern African network, including destinations such as Durban, Gqeberha, Cape Town, Harare, and Lusaka. The reciprocal arrangement ensures both airlines benefit from extended market reach and an enhanced passenger experience.
The agreement simplifies travel by allowing passengers to book multi-leg itineraries on a single ticket, make payments in local currency, and enjoy integrated check-in and baggage handling from origin to final destination. This streamlining reduces the friction typically associated with multi-airline journeys, offering a smoother and more efficient travel experience.
Beyond passenger convenience, the alliance strengthens African air connectivity, supports economic growth, and fosters diplomatic and business ties. By facilitating easier movement for corporate travelers and boosting tourism between Southern and Central Africa, the partnership is expected to stimulate trade and improve access to global markets.
For SAA, the codeshare expands its network and reinforces Johannesburg and Cape Town as key gateways to international destinations. TAAG benefits from improved access to Southern African cities and streamlined connections to Europe and South America. The collaboration also allows both airlines to optimize route networks, share operational resources, and strengthen their competitive position in Africa’s aviation sector.
Industry experts note the timing of the codeshare is strategic, as African airlines recover from recent global disruptions and address increasing demand for intra-African and long-haul travel. Integrated services and expanded routes are becoming critical differentiators for carriers seeking to capture a larger share of the continent’s growing travel market.

The codeshare supports African tourism boards and Destination Management Companies (DMCs) by making the region more accessible and globally competitive.
