AFCON Thriller! South Africa Edges Zimbabwe 3-2 in Decisive Clash, Securing Last-16 Spot

South Africa booked their place in the Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 with a dramatic 3-2 win over Zimbabwe in Marrakech. This victory, however, was hard-fought and fraught with the very tensions and historical complexities that pre-match analyses had highlighted, pushing Bafana Bafana to their absolute limit against their determined neighbours.
The breakthrough for South Africa came early, just seven minutes into the game, when Tshepang Moremi scored thanks to a heavily deflected effort that sailed over goalkeeper Washington Arubi. Zimbabwe, known for their resilience, responded swiftly. Tawanda Maswanhise leveled the score 12 minutes later, curling a precise finish into the bottom-left corner, showcasing their ability to frustrate their opponents.
South Africa regained the lead five minutes into the second half as Lyle Foster capitalized on a defensive error, heading a loose ball past Arubi. The match remained incredibly tense, with Oswin Appollis denied by the Zimbabwean keeper and Maswanhise hitting the post at the other end, demonstrating that Zimbabwe continued to pose a significant threat. Zimbabwe’s hopes were further complicated 17 minutes from time when Aubrey Modiba scored an own goal, adding another layer of drama. Yet, they fought for a comeback until a VAR-checked handball by Marvelous Nakamba handed South Africa a penalty. Appollis coolly converted the spot-kick, sealing the crucial win.
This dramatic encounter was no surprise, as the rivalry between South Africa and Zimbabwe is deep-seated, having clashed 19 times prior to this tournament, with South Africa holding a slight edge (eight wins to Zimbabwe’s six, alongside five draws). Numbers, however, often conceal an uncomfortable truth: Zimbabwe has consistently proven capable of frustrating, stalling, and psychologically unsettling their neighbours. A recent 0-0 draw in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, where South Africa dominated but failed to score against a resilient Zimbabwean defense led by Arubi, underscored this pattern.
Tournament pressure further heightened the stakes. Egypt had already secured top spot in Group B after earlier victories over both Zimbabwe and South Africa, including a controversial 1-0 win. Zimbabwe, sitting bottom with one point from a narrow 2-1 loss to Egypt and a 1-1 draw with Angola, still held the slim prospect of a dramatic progression with a win against South Africa. Conversely, South Africa faced the burden of expectation, knowing a draw would suffice but also mindful that AFCON history often punishes teams playing for a draw.
Zimbabwe's AFCON record revealed an intriguing trend: all three of their previous AFCON victories came on matchday three. South Africa, meanwhile, had not won their final group match at AFCON since 2002, being winless in their last seven matchday three fixtures. These psychological scars were a significant concern for coach Hugo Broos and his technical team.
Central to Zimbabwe’s belief was Knowledge Musona, the 35-year-old forward and emotional leader. His equalizer against Angola made him Zimbabwe’s oldest AFCON goalscorer, and his influence extended beyond goals, as demonstrated by his five shots against Angola. South Africa, despite statistical dominance in earlier matches (like 63.8% possession against Egypt), had struggled to convert chances, failing to score in their final group match at the last two AFCON tournaments. Hugo Broos had expressed frustration, urging his players to refocus.
Zimbabwe also faced adversity with the injury of Teenage Hadebe, but their ability to reorganize defensively, coupled with Washington Arubi’s commanding performances, meant they remained a formidable challenge. The 3-2 result confirmed South Africa’s second-place finish in Group B behind Egypt, while Zimbabwe, alongside Angola, bowed out of the tournament, having lived up to the pre-match anticipation of being dangerous when desperate.
