AFCON Showdown Looms: Super Eagles Brace for Crucial Uganda Clash Amidst Injury Scares and Tactical Challenges

Nigeria's Super Eagles have secured their spot in the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Tunisia. Despite climbing to the top of Group C, head coach Eric Chelle has emphasized that the team remains a work in progress and key weaknesses must be addressed before their upcoming clash with Uganda.
The match against Tunisia in Fes showcased both Nigeria's strengths and vulnerabilities. Goals from Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi, and Ademola Lookman put Nigeria firmly in control for large spells, with the team boasting 70% ball possession and dominating for approximately 75 minutes. This performance marked significant milestones, including Nigeria's first win against Tunisia since 2019 and the first time they scored three goals in an AFCON match since 2021. Ndidi also opened his international goal account, while Osimhen and Lookman added to their AFCON tally. Statistically, Tunisia had not conceded three goals in any match this year, making Nigeria the first African side to breach them so decisively.
However, the comfortable lead turned into a tense finale as Tunisia capitalized on two set pieces to score twice, highlighting familiar concerns for the Super Eagles. Coach Chelle admitted to a late drop-off, citing loss of concentration, fatigue, and issues with defending set pieces. He stressed the need for improvement in the closing 15 minutes of matches, acknowledging that maintaining high pressure for a full 90 minutes is challenging. He defended his late substitutions, explaining they were aimed at protecting the flanks as Tunisia pressed forward. Midfielder Frank Onyeka also echoed the coach's sentiments, stating that allowing two easy goals after being three ahead is
