AFCON 2025: Super Eagles and Tanzania Brace for Epic Showdown

The highly anticipated 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is set to kick off, and one of the pivotal opening fixtures will see three-time champions Nigeria, known as the Super Eagles, take on Tanzania's Taifa Stars. This crucial Group C encounter is scheduled for Tuesday in Fès, Morocco, with both teams eager to secure a positive start in a group that also includes the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia and the Cranes of Uganda. Only the top two teams from each group are guaranteed a place in the Round of 16, underscoring the immense importance of every match, especially the opener.
Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has emphasized the significance of winning the first game, viewing it as essential for setting the right tone for the rest of the tournament. "We’re happy to be here. This is a big game because this is the first game and the first game is very important. For sure, we want to win this game," Chelle stated at a press conference in Fès. His sentiment was echoed by newly appointed captain Wilfred Ndidi, who declared the team's full readiness. Ndidi, who missed the previous AFCON due to injury and now leads the squad after William Troost-Ekong's retirement, highlighted the high spirits and energy within the camp. "The spirit in the camp is very high, we’re very energised. This game is very important for us, it’s the game that sets the momentum," he explained. With a formidable record of losing only once in their last 14 AFCON group stage games and all 28 players available, Nigeria enters the clash as overwhelming favorites, backed by their rich pedigree in the competition.
On the other side, Tanzania's head coach, Miguel Gamondi, is well aware of the monumental challenge his team faces. Gamondi stressed the need for an extraordinary effort from his players when confronting a Nigerian side boasting some of the continent's best talent and widely considered title contenders. The Taifa Stars, making their fourth AFCON appearance, have historically struggled to progress beyond the group stage, adding another layer of difficulty to this fixture. Despite the odds, Gamondi's strategy is clear: while acknowledging the "herculean task" of neutralizing the Super Eagles, Tanzania will adopt an offensive mindset. "We need to be realistic, when you see the qualities in the Nigeria team you need to put in more than 100 percent effort to try to neutralize them. Our mentality is to try to play and attack as well, we need to be tactically disciplined," he told reporters. He added, "It will be a very difficult tough game but a very nice challenge for us." Tanzania plans to actively seek possession and attack Éric Chelle's men, aiming to make a statement in their opening match, which kicks off at 6:30 PM Nigerian time.
