Accra Central Inferno: Police Barracks Razed, Families Left Homeless by Devastating Blaze

A massive fire broke out on Wednesday night, June 3, at the Accra Central Police Station in Tudu, specifically impacting the Accra Central Police Barracks Annex within the Accra Water Works area. The devastating blaze destroyed accommodation for 42 officers and 32 rooms at the barracks annex, ultimately displacing over 140 personnel and their families. Additionally, a one-storey building and its contents were extensively damaged.

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, swiftly assured government intervention, conveying President John Dramani Mahama's sympathy and noting that the Vice President had been briefed and was expected to visit. The Minister stressed the priority of immediate relief, instructing emergency teams to act without delay. He mandated that all affected persons be moved to temporary accommodation, even hotels, immediately. Long-term plans are also being put in place for the reconstruction of a more modern and fire-resilient facility, with discussions already ongoing with a private partner to address the police housing deficit.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) described the incident as one of the most challenging they had faced, attributing difficulties to several factors. Assistant Divisional Officer Alex King Nartey reported that firefighters, responding promptly to a distress call at 8:05 p.m., encountered intense gas explosions from stored gas cylinders and deep freezers, live electrical hazards causing shocks to personnel, and significant crowd interference requiring collaboration with police for control. Furthermore, inadequate firefighting infrastructure, specifically the lack of sufficient fire hydrants in the area, posed a major obstacle, with only one available within the police station compound. Heavy rains on Wednesday night also compounded the challenge, as emergency teams were simultaneously responding to multiple incidents across Accra, including other fires and a building collapse.

Despite these considerable challenges, the GNFS, deploying multiple teams from various fire stations and supported by a water tanker, managed to confine the blaze by 10:29 p.m., bring it under control by 11:50 p.m., and completely extinguish it by 3:41 a.m. on Thursday. Critically, firefighters successfully prevented the fire from spreading to the nearby Ghana Water Limited facility and other adjoining structures, averting further losses. While property was lost, no fatalities were recorded, a point of gratitude expressed by Minister Mohammed-Mubarak, who emphasized that life is irreplaceable. One firefighter, however, sustained injuries during the operation but is currently in stable condition and responding well to treatment at the Police Hospital.

Investigations into the exact cause of the fire are ongoing. The Accra Regional Police Command initially reported an arrest in connection with the incident, but later clarified that these reports were inaccurate and no arrests had been made at that stage of investigations. The GNFS has renewed calls for stricter fire safety measures, proper storage of gas cylinders, and improved emergency infrastructure, particularly the installation and maintenance of functional fire hydrants in high-risk areas, to prevent similar future disasters.
