Abuja Erupts: Wike's Clash with Military Officer Ignites National Outcry and Defence Minister's Protection Promise

A significant public confrontation between Nigeria's Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer, Lieutenant Ahmad Yerima, has ignited widespread debate and condemnation regarding the conduct of public officials, the role of the military in civilian matters, and the integrity of national institutions. The incident, which occurred over a disputed parcel of land in Abuja, specifically Plot 1946, Buffer Transit Southern Park Way, Gaduwa District, saw Minister Wike accuse military personnel of illegal occupation and intimidation, while Lieutenant Yerima firmly maintained he was acting under lawful orders.
The heated exchange unfolded when FCT officials attempting to access the site were reportedly blocked and chased away by armed soldiers. Viral videos captured Wike's visibly angry demeanor as he demanded to see legal documents justifying the military's presence, insisting that no one, regardless of rank, is above the law. He challenged Yerima, stating, "Because you’re an officer, nobody does that (nobody acquires land illegally)." In response, Yerima, despite being subjected to foul language including being called "a big fool," maintained his composure, repeatedly asserting, "I am not a fool, sir. I am acting on instructions, and I am a commissioned officer." He insisted that all actions on the land were legitimate and that he possessed integrity.
The land in dispute is allegedly owned by former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (retd.), who reportedly acquired it in 2020. However, Lere Olayinka, an aide to Minister Wike, has challenged this claim, asserting that Gambo does not possess valid title documents. Olayinka stated that the land was originally allocated in 2007 to Santos Estate Limited for park and recreation purposes. He further alleged that in 2022, the company's request to convert the land's use to commercial was declined by the then FCT Minister, but the company proceeded to illegally partition and sell the land, including to the former naval chief. Wike himself questioned the lawlessness, emphasizing, "How can we continue to allow lawlessness to prevail? What about those who don’t have the military behind them?"
The confrontation has drawn diverse reactions. The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), also heading Transparency International (TI) Nigeria, strongly condemned Wike's "reckless and uncivil behaviour," describing it as "gross indiscipline and recklessness unbecoming of a public officer." CISLAC noted a "consistent pattern of arrogance and lack of emotional control" from Wike, dating back to his time as Rivers State governor. The organization warned that such conduct damages Nigeria’s image, erodes public confidence, and is "dangerous to national security." They called on President Bola Tinubu to take firm action and demanded a public apology from Wike to the officer, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the President.
Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, characterized the clash as an "unfortunate reflection of the growing institutional disorder" and a "national embarrassment." He raised critical questions about the appropriate use of the military in civilian matters, the respect for administrative boundaries, and the culture of civility, calling for an honest national reflection and the rebuilding of institutions stronger than individuals. Former Chief of Army Staff Tukur Buratai also described Wike's action as a threat to national security, advising him to apologize to the military.
In contrast, the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, publicly defended Lieutenant Yerima, stating unequivocally that the military would protect its officers on lawful duty. "We will always protect our officers on lawful duty," Badaru affirmed, assuring that Yerima would be safeguarded if he was performing his job "greatly well." CISLAC, despite condemning Wike, also commended Yerima for his discipline and professionalism, describing his conduct as a reflection of "the integrity and command ethics that define Nigeria’s military." However, Niger Delta activist Asari Dokubo took a different stance, condemning the military officer's conduct and insisting that Wike's authority as a minister must be respected. Dokubo called for Yerima to be reprimanded and court-martialled.
The incident highlights crucial issues regarding governance, institutional respect, and public trust. CISLAC stressed the need for public officials to demonstrate restraint, humility, and discipline, urging leadership that strengthens rather than weakens public trust. The Minister of Defence, while addressing the incident, also used the opportunity to unveil new initiatives aimed at improving military operations, veteran welfare, and national security, including the 'Reclaiming the Ungoverned Space for Economic Benefits Programme' (RUSEB-P) and the 'Thank A Soldier QR Code'. The background of Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo, an underwater warfare specialist who served as Chief of Naval Staff from January 2021 to June 2023, has also been brought into focus as the alleged owner of the disputed land.
