A$AP Rocky Drops New Single 'Helicopter$' and Teases Upcoming Album!

A$AP Rocky is on the cusp of releasing his highly anticipated album, “Don’t Be Dumb,” which is scheduled to drop on Friday, January 16. Leading up to the full album, the Harlem artist delighted fans with a new single, “Helicopter$,” released on Monday, January 12. Produced by Kelvin Krash, the track features Rocky’s distinct style, where he notably clarifies his brand loyalties, stating he won’t be wearing Nikes but rather Puma, Gap, and GRIM.
The release of “Helicopter$” was accompanied by a partially animated music video, directed by Dan Streit. The clip plunges viewers into a chaotic narrative, depicting A$AP Rocky leading his crew through a city in a stolen helicopter, all while a frantic cop chase unfolds. The tension escalates as a SWAT team breaks into Rocky’s home, leading to a dramatic last-ditch escape attempt via the chopper. The video concludes with a stark visual of Rocky falling and tragically perishing.
Beyond its musical and visual impact, “Helicopter$” has made an unexpected crossover into the sports world. ESPN selected the track as the official soundtrack for the College Football Playoff National Championship. It’s worth noting the distinction from a “helicopter tackle” in football, which involves a player being launched and spinning mid-air, a concept likely unrelated to Rocky’s lyrical themes. This isn't the first time A$AP Rocky's music has graced ESPN, as his track “Punk Rocky” was also utilized to soundtrack a semifinals spot.
The road to “Don’t Be Dumb” has been a journey for A$AP Rocky since his 2018 album, “Testing.” In preparation for the new album, he previously released the indie-leaning single “Punk Rocky” on January 5. This track featured actress Winona Ryder in its music video, further building anticipation for his latest work. Meanwhile, the College Football Playoff National Championship, for which “Helicopter$” serves as the anthem, will feature Indiana University battling the University of Miami on Monday, January 19. The game is set to be played at Hardrock Stadium in Miami Gardens, effectively serving as a home game for the Hurricanes.
