Zombie Apocalypse Surprise: Unscored Horror Flick Dominates Streaming Worldwide!

An unexpected cinematic triumph has taken the global Netflix viewership charts by storm, as the Indonesian zombie movie, 'The Elixir,' seized the top spot. This remarkable achievement saw 'The Elixir' not only outperform director Danny Boyle's highly anticipated legacy sequel, '28 Years Later,' which landed at tenth place, but also dethrone Keira Knightley's murder mystery, 'The Woman in Cabin 10,' from its leading position.

According to FlixPatrol, 'The Elixir' claimed the coveted number one ranking on October 24 and successfully maintained it through October 25. During this period, 'The Woman in Cabin 10' secured the second spot, while Netflix's colossal hit 'KPop Demon Hunters' occupied third. The fourth and fifth positions were taken by the streamer's acclaimed documentary 'The Perfect Neighbor' and the Roald Dahl adaptation 'The Twits,' respectively. Notably, all titles comprising the top five are Netflix originals, underscoring the platform's robust original content strategy.

'The Elixir' is directed by Kimo Stamboel, an acclaimed filmmaker who constitutes one half of the celebrated Indonesian horror filmmaking duo, The Mo Brothers, alongside Timo Tjahjanto. Together, The Mo Brothers have left a significant mark on the horror genre with previous works such as 'Macabre' and 'Headshot.'

Tjahjanto, Stamboel's counterpart in The Mo Brothers, has already made a successful foray into Hollywood, having recently directed 'Nobody 2' starring Bob Odenkirk, which garnered approximately $40 million at the worldwide box office against a reported budget of $25 million. He is currently working on 'The Beekeeper 2,' a sequel to the action hit 'The Beekeeper,' which amassed over $160 million globally. Given the immense success of 'The Elixir,' and mirroring Tjahjanto's own breakthrough with the Netflix hit 'The Night Comes for Us,' it is widely anticipated that Kimo Stamboel will soon be receiving offers from Western studios.

Set in the rural landscapes of Indonesia, 'The Elixir' serves as a sharp critique of Big Pharma. The film's narrative follows a family's desperate quest for survival after the ambitious boss of a pharmaceutical corporation irresponsibly launches an untested "elixir" into the market. This ill-conceived product first infects the corporate head himself, subsequently spreading the contagion throughout the population. While the movie has yet to accumulate an official Rotten Tomatoes score, the majority of early reviews listed on aggregator sites have been largely positive. As word-of-mouth continues to build, it is expected that more audiences will discover the film, leading to further critical attention and solidifying Indonesian cinema's burgeoning influence on the global stage. Its strong viewership numbers suggest that an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score is likely on the horizon.

Categorized under the Horror and Thriller genres, 'The Elixir' has a runtime of 116 minutes. Kimo Stamboel directed the film and also contributed to the screenplay alongside Agasyah Karim and Khalid Kashogi. Edwin Nazir served as the producer. The cast features notable actors including Eva Celia (uncredited), Mikha Tambayong (as Ningsih), Donny Damara, and Marthino Lio.
