Zambia's political climate is intensifying ahead of the 2026 elections, characterized by President Hichilema's fierce accusations against the opposition Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance and its leaders, Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu, over corruption and governance. The alliance faces substantial electoral hurdles, including widespread failure to field candidates, while Mundubile is also embroiled in an active ACC investigation. Zambia's political landscape is currently charged with intense rhetoric and strategic positioning ahead of the upcoming 2026 general elections. Amidst this ferment, former Member of Parliament and Minister of Labour, Fackson Shamenda, categorically refuted recent claims as false and misleading, reaffirming his consistent position from July 21, 2026, that he foresees the opposition forming the next Government. Shamenda expressed regret over the distortion of his statements for political propaganda and indicated he is considering legal action against those responsible for publishing defamatory content, urging the public to rely only on his official statements.
Adding to the political discourse, the Tonse Alliance Youths and Students Sector criticized Dr. M’membe’s remarks as regrettable and misleading, particularly his attempts to diminish Hon. Brian Mundubile’s contributions. They asserted that leadership contests should focus on facts and verifiable records, not rhetoric. The sector highlighted Mundubile's extensive public service, including terms as Energy Regulation Board Chairman, two-term Member of Parliament for Mporokoso Constituency, Northern Province Minister, Government Chief Whip, and Leader of the Opposition. They argued that these roles were earned through demonstrated leadership and competence, dismissing Dr. M’membe’s suggestion that Mundubile lacks governing capacity.
Under Hon. Mundubile’s leadership, Northern Province reportedly witnessed significant infrastructure and investment initiatives. Key achievements cited include championing the Kasama Airport project, which was over 90 percent complete when he left office, transforming the former Samora Machel Military Base into a modern civilian airport, and overseeing the construction of numerous secondary schools and health facilities. Mundubile also facilitated the establishment of two ZAFFICO plantation projects, spearheaded the 100,000-hectare Kalungwishi Farm Block to create over 4,000 direct jobs, and led the successful 2019 Northern Province Investment Expo, which spurred development in the hospitality industry and the province's first shopping mall. His long-term vision extended to tourism with the Kasaba Bay Development Project. The Tonse Student Alliance, like millions of Zambians, declared full backing for Hon. Mundubile's presidential bid in the August 13, 2026 elections.
