Zambia Mourns and Reacts to Passing of Ex-President Edgar Lungu

The Nigerian government has conveyed its condolences to Zambia following the passing of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu on June 5, 2025, at the age of 68. In a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria acknowledged Mr. Lungu's dedicated service to Zambia from 2015 to 2021, a period marked by initiatives promoting inclusivity, national unity, and economic diversification. His administration was also credited with significant milestones in infrastructure development and regional diplomacy, all while championing the spirit of “One Zambia, One Nation.” Nigeria recognized President Lungu's efforts in strengthening Africa's collective voice on the global stage and his commitment to regional solidarity, extending sympathies to his family, the Patriotic Front party, and all Zambians.
In Zambia, the news of Mr. Lungu's death has been met with calls for unity and respect. The United Party for National Development (UPND) leadership in Mazabuka district expressed sadness and emphasized the need for the nation to unite in mourning and provide a dignified sendoff for the former President. UPND Mazabuka District Chairperson Wilfred Mulomba urged all political figures to avoid politicizing the funeral, stressing the importance of honoring President Lungu's legacy appropriately. Similarly, the Patriotic Front (PF) in Nakonde district established a mourning site at Mukoma, inviting party members and the public to pay respects. This site includes a book of condolences, and provisions for clergy to offer encouragement, as well as tents and fire for those wishing to stay overnight, reflecting similar arrangements made in districts across the country.
The former President's passing has also had a profound personal impact on some individuals. Former Catholic Priest Charles Kakula reportedly attempted to take his own life upon hearing of Mr. Lungu's death and is currently receiving treatment and stabilizing at Toronto Trust Hospital in Canada. Sources indicated that intense depression and uncontrollable crying preceded this act. In an interview, Mr. Kakula paid tribute to President Lungu, describing him as a champion of the poor and a dignified leader who left an indelible mark on Zambia, underscoring the deep affection many held for him.
President Lungu's appreciation for gospel music, particularly the song “Niwe Lesa” by renowned gospel artiste Kings Mumbi, also known as Kings Malembe Malembe, has been highlighted as a significant aspect of his personality. Kings Malembe shared that the song resonated deeply with Lungu, reflecting his personal devotion and his belief in God's grace, compassion, justice, and mercy. Music was described as the
