Zambia Elects! Hichilema's Staggering Lead Seals 2026 Presidential Victory
Hakainde Hichilema holds a commanding lead of nearly one million votes over Brian Mundubile as Zambia's presidential election results continue to be announced, with independent verification by TI-Z confirming a 100% match. While the ECZ's final declaration is pending, the arithmetic strongly favors Hichilema, prompting calls for peace and concession from his rival and affirmations of a prophetic victory.
Hakainde Hichilema, President of the United Party for National Development (UPND), has significantly extended his lead in the presidential election, according to consolidated results announced by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ). With results from 192 out of 226 constituencies now tallied, Hichilema has garnered 2,430,702 votes, establishing a lead of 969,245 votes over his rival, Brian Mundubile of the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP), who stands at 1,461,457 votes. This places Hichilema at approximately 62.5% of the votes against Mundubile's 37.5%, even as 34 constituencies await verification and final tallying.
Adding an independent layer of verification, Transparency International Zambia (TI-Z) has confirmed a 100 percent match between the official results announced by the ECZ and the figures collected independently by its monitors. TI-Z's assessment covers 53 out of 105 constituency presidential results observed by its monitors, representing 96.9 percent of their observed results. The organization's monitors diligently observed the counting and tallying processes at polling stations and totaling centers, providing crucial independent comparison and affirmation of the electoral authority's figures. TI-Z has stated its intention to continue assessing the remaining results as the electoral process concludes.
The latest results underscore Hichilema's strong performance across several regions, particularly in Southern, Western, and North-Western provinces. Notable victories include Mapatizya constituency in Zimba, where Hichilema secured 38,365 votes against Mundubile's 144. Other significant margins for Hichilema were recorded in Chirundu (22,565 to 2,477), Nalolo (21,039 to 340), Sikongo (19,548 to 329), Chavuma (19,272 to 1,331), Kaoma Central (18,518 to 1,075), and Shang’ombo South (15,685 to 425). These substantial leads in his strongholds have created a formidable advantage.
Conversely, Brian Mundubile has demonstrated strength in parts of the Copperbelt and Muchinga provinces, as well as in his northern and eastern bases. His wins include Bangweulu constituency (26,493 to 9,023), Malole (20,431 to 3,994), Bwana Mkubwa (20,249 to 10,361), Chingola Central (20,142 to 11,709), Mufulira (15,152 to 8,102), Chipata Central (14,206 to 7,271), Chipangali East (14,173 to 6,327), Mporokoso (12,619 to 5,854), and Luwingu Central (11,245 to 4,560). However, the challenge for Mundubile lies in the fact that while he wins constituencies, his numerical surpluses are often not enough to offset Hichilema's devastating margins elsewhere. Even in the Copperbelt, which showed some fracture, Hichilema secured wins in rural areas like Lufwanyama West (16,062 to 2,639) and Mpongwe East (16,971 to 2,020), preventing a uniform opposition sweep.
The mathematical path for Mundubile to overturn Hichilema's lead has become exceedingly difficult. To catch up, he would need an average advantage of approximately 28,507 net votes from each of the remaining 34 constituencies, a requirement that has more than doubled since the 161-constituency mark. Despite the ECZ's final declaration still pending, assessments, such as that by The People’s Brief, indicate that Hichilema is firmly on course to retain State House. The shrinking map of outstanding results and the near one-million-vote deficit make a reversal highly improbable.
Amidst the unfolding results, Patrick Maboshe, a Political Party Campaign Strategist, has publicly urged Brian Mundubile to promote peace and accept the outcome of the presidential results. Maboshe advised Mundubile to concede and congratulate President-Elect Hakainde Hichilema, emphasizing the importance of peace, humility, and love demonstrated during his campaign. He encouraged Mundubile to guard his faith and heart against disappointment or bitterness, suggesting that God's plans are sovereign and that wisdom should guide his actions, possibly even in planning for future elections.
The election outcome has also resonated with prophetic declarations. Prophet Iginla, who had previously predicted President Hichilema's victory by a significant margin, stated that the results demonstrate the unchangeable will of God. Congratulating Hichilema, Prophet Iginla expressed confidence in his presidency, foreseeing positive economic developments for Zambia, including increased economic activity and improved living conditions. He urged Zambians to support the President-elect for a prosperous and smooth presidency.
