Authored by Shawn Xie, Zhiyuan Wang, Chenna Keshava B S, and Mayukha Vadari, the "On-Chain Cosigner" proposal addresses a critical limitation within XRPL's existing multi-signature framework. As highlighted by prominent XRPL community member Vet, most blockchain chains, including the current XRPL implementation, necessitate multi-signers to coordinate and collect signatures either off-chain or through smart contracts. This new proposal introduces native on-chain multi-signature coordination, ensuring a completely decentralized process.

The proposal specifically targets and solves what its authors describe as the "last mile" problem. While XRPL currently supports multi-signature transactions, the existing implementation relies heavily on an off-chain coordination process. This involves manually creating and distributing a transaction to each authorized signer, with individual signatures collected via external channels such as email. This method presents a vulnerability: if the coordinator responsible for collecting signatures goes offline or loses them, the entire signing process can fail.

Under the new "On-Chain Cosigner" proposal, this challenge is overcome by allowing participants to create a TransactionProposal object directly on the XRP Ledger. This object would be permanently stored on-chain with an immutable transaction payload. Each submitted signature would be immediately validated and added to the proposal's growing list of approvals. Once completed, anyone could copy the fully signed transaction and submit it through XRPL's standard transaction process, removing the need for any additional off-chain signature assembly.

A key emphasis of the proposal is its suitability for enterprise and institutional use cases. The feature is designed to complement several other advanced XRPL capabilities already in place or planned, including Batch transactions (XLS-56), sponsored fees and reserves, and future lending protocol operations, thereby enhancing the ledger's utility for sophisticated financial workflows.
