Xbox's Next Big Screen Venture: 'Pirates' Successor Lands Movie Deal!

The success of recent game adaptations has set a new precedent for the entertainment industry. The Super Mario Bros. Movie demonstrated how family animation could transform game nostalgia into a billion-dollar theatrical event, while Five Nights at Freddy’s showcased the power of horror games to draw their dedicated fanbases directly to theaters. Fallout further solidified this trend by becoming one of Prime Video’s most popular shows. Capitalizing on this momentum, Xbox is now actively expanding its efforts to convert its prominent gaming franchises into film and television properties. This strategic push includes projects like A Minecraft Movie, an anticipated box-office success scheduled for 2025.

A significant new adaptation in Xbox’s pipeline is a live-action movie based on “Sea of Thieves.” This project presents a unique and intriguing challenge because, unlike traditional game adaptations that often feature a singular hero and a linear plot, “Sea of Thieves” is an open-world pirate sandbox. Its gameplay is centered around player-created experiences involving crews, treasure hunts, skeleton fights, ship battles, alliances, betrayals, and the inherent chaos generated by players forging their own narratives.

Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty has elucidated that the true “main character” of “Sea of Thieves” is not an individual NPC but rather the player and the collective community. Consequently, the film adaptation’s primary goal must be to capture the game’s distinctive tone and immersive atmosphere, rather than merely translating a pre-defined campaign. This innovative approach could prove to be a distinct advantage for Xbox. Hollywood has been in pursuit of another broad-appeal pirate-adventure property for years, and this strategy allows Xbox to enter that space with a fresh perspective, avoiding direct replication of iconic figures such as Jack Sparrow.

A live-action “Sea of Thieves” movie is officially in development, as confirmed by recent news reports, with Destin Daniel Cretton producing through his company, Hisako. Cretton’s involvement carries significant weight, given his acclaimed directorial work on blockbusters like “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which immediately bestows blockbuster credibility upon the project, even though a director for the film has not yet been announced.

The “Sea of Thieves” adaptation is not an isolated endeavor but is deeply integrated into Xbox’s expansive plan to leverage its intellectual property across film and television. The company reportedly has more than a dozen adaptation projects currently in development. These include a “Gears of War” series with Netflix, a “Wolfenstein” adaptation for Amazon, additional “Minecraft” content, and several other unannounced titles. Xbox’s shrewd strategy involves adapting a diverse range of games, betting that compelling worlds, distinctive tones, vibrant communities, and unique gameplay identities can successfully translate into engaging screen franchises, not just games with established narratives.

Further elaborating on Xbox’s film ventures, “A Minecraft Movie” is slated for release on April 4, 2025. This family comedy adventure fantasy film will have a runtime of 101 minutes and is directed by Jared Hess. The screenplay credits include Chris Galletta, Gavin James, Chris Bowman, Neil Widener, and Hubbel Palmer. The production team boasts Jason Momoa, Jill Messick, Mary Parent, Roy Lee, Cale Boyter, Jon Berg, and Vu Bui as producers. Notable cast members include Jason Momoa as Garrett and Jack Black as Steve.
