WVU Basketball Sleepwalks Through Bad Loss at BYU

Published 2 weeks ago3 minute read

WVU basketball had its latest tipoff of the season and the Mountaineers looked asleep for much of their game at BYU Saturday night.

The Cougars (21-8, 12-6 Big 12) won their sixth-straight game, 77-56 over the Mountaineers (17-12, 8-10), a winning streak that started last month in Morgantown.

Both teams started ice-cold from the floor as defenses ruled the first half. Less than 20 points had been scored after the first 13 minutes as BYU led 11-8.

At that point, the Cougars had shot 4-15 from the floor and 0-4 from three. The Mountaineers were even worse, shooting just 4-21 from the floor and 0-9 from range. WVU missed 11 of its first 13 shots, while BYU missed eight of nine shots over a nine-minute stretch.

West Virginia’s only offensive success in the game was a 9-0 run the Mountaineers were able to put together. Amani Hansberry started the run, making the first three-pointer of the game at the 6:29 mark. Javon Small capped the run with WVU’s second and final three-pointer of the half as the Mountaineers pulled ahead by four points, 17-13.

The first half Saturday was the first time this season BYU did not make a three-pointer in a half. Instead, the Cougars found success attacking the rim as both of WVU’s centers got into foul trouble.

BYU closed the first half on a 10-0 run, with all but two points coming from either inside the paint or at the free throw line. The Cougars made their final four shots of the first half. WVU did not score for the final three minutes of the half as BYU led 25-19 at the break.

The Cougars wasted no time hitting their first three-pointer as Egor Demin opened the second half by hitting from range. A hot start to the second half saw BYU extend its run to 18-0 and build a 14-point lead, 33-19. That was the start of a dominant second half for the Cougars. Big man Fousseyni Traore scored at will in the paint, repeatedly torching WVU centers Hansberry and Eduardo Andre.

BYU put the game away when three-straight three-pointers put the Cougars up 24, 61-37, with 8:21 to play.

WVU’s offensive struggles persisted from the first half as its defense got very few stops after halftime. Just like it did in the first meeting, BYU shot over 60% from the floor in the second half Saturday.

Traore finished with a 20-point double-double, adding 10 rebounds. He was 9-13 from the floor. Demin added 15 points with a pair of three-pointers. Richie Saunders was third with 13 points.

As a team, BYU scored 46 of its 77 points in the paint, shooting 10-14 on layups. The Cougars also won on the grass, out-rebounding the Mountaineers 43-32.

Small paced the Mountaineers with 15 points on 5-14 shooting. WVU shot just 33.3% in the game.

WVU basketball concludes its two-game road trip at Utah Tuesday night. The Utes are being coached by former WVU interim head coach Josh Eilert, who was named Utah’s interim head coach last month.

The game is scheduled to tip off at 9 p.m. and be broadcast on ESPN+.
