Minority accuses National Security of stealing GH¢10,000 and jewellery in raid on former BoG Governor's home
The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has issued a strong appeal to President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to intervene and halt the escalating raids conducted by National Security personnel on the homes of former heads of state institutions. Speaking to the press on Thursday, March 20, Afenyo-Markin vehemently condemned these actions, characterizing them as intimidation and attacks carried out under the guise of national security operations.
His remarks are a direct response to the recent raid on the private residence of the former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison. According to reports, the operation was executed in the early hours of Wednesday, March 19, 2025, by a team of approximately 20 armed men. The team was allegedly led by Richard Jakpa, the Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat.
Details emerging from the incident paint a disturbing picture. The heavily armed operatives, some concealing their faces with balaclavas and wielding AK-47 rifles, reportedly stormed Dr. Addison’s Roman Ridge residence in Accra while he was present. Sources indicate that the National Security team immediately disabled the CCTV system upon arrival at the property before proceeding with their search.
Afenyo-Markin's appeal to President Mahama was impassioned, urging him to take responsibility for the actions of the National Security personnel and to curb what he described as an abuse of executive power. “President John Dramani Mahama, please leave a legacy,” Afenyo-Markin stated. “Let it be said that even if there were excesses in the exercise of executive power when you had the opportunity, you changed it for good. Own that legacy in your name. We are tired of the intimidation, the attacks, and the hypocrisy.”
The Minority Leader further made a serious allegation, claiming that the operatives who raided Dr. Addison’s residence stole valuables, including cash and jewellery, from the household during the operation. These allegations add another layer of concern to the already contentious situation, raising questions about the conduct and motives of the National Security team involved.
