College Basketball Program Could Target Coach Who Eliminated Them From NCAA Tournament

Published 1 day ago2 minute read

The First Four of the 2025 NCAA Tournament wrapped up Wednesday night with matchups between Mount St. Mary’s and American, as well as Xavier and Texas. Now, all eyes shift to Thursday as the Round of 64 gets underway.

Meanwhile, one of those coaches is "likely" to be fired. Immediately after Xavier’s 86-80 win over Texas, college basketball analyst Jeff Goodman reported that the Longhorns are "likely to make a move" on head coach Rodney Terry.

"Rodney Terry took over after Chris Beard was fired midseason a couple years ago and took Texas to the Elite Eight to keep the full-time job," Goodman wrote. "But sources have told @TheFieldOf68 that Texas is likely to make a move on Terry after two straight years of barely making the NCAA tourney and getting bounced in the First Four this year."

With Texas "likely" to part ways with Terry, the loss to Xavier adds an interesting twist. When Terry held the interim tag during the 2022-23 college basketball season, "Texas was looking hard" at hiring Xavier head coach Sean Miller. Ultimately, the Longhorns stuck with Terry and made him their full-time head coach.

Goodman pointed that out, adding, "It’ll be interesting to see if Miller would again be at the top of Chris Del Conte’s (Texas AD) list this time around - especially after watching this Xavier victory."

Texas ends the season with a 19-16 record, including a 6-12 mark in its first year in the SEC. Terry’s overall record with the Longhorns now stands at 62-36.
